Mike Pompeo’s PAC Spent $42K on Copies of His Own Book and Now It’s a Bestseller

Mike Pompeo’s new memoir might not be flying off the bookshelves—but bulk orders from his political action committee on the day that it was released appear to have propelled it onto the New York Times bestseller list, anyways.

Champion American Values, a PAC promoting the former secretary of state and likely Republican presidential candidate, spent $42,000 on the bulk orders of the book on the day it was published, according to a Monday filing with the Federal Election Commission. The purchase was first reported by Forbes.

That was enough to get “Never Give An Inch: Fighting for the America I Love” on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestsellers list. It debuted at #3 and currently sits at #5.

It’s not clear from the filing how many books the PAC bought, but it’s retailing for $20.04 on Amazon. At that price, the PAC could have purchased roughly 2100 copies.

Pompeo’s memoir release is part of what looks like the beginnings of a likely presidential campaign.

The lap band doesn’t seem to have worked for Krispy Kreme. As far as the book purchase, I expect it’s a come-on for financial backers - donate more than $x at some political soiree, get an autographed copy and a photo with the candidate.

Kind of funny what a little money buys these days. Are book sales that slow that $42k makes a bestseller? The same is true in music since streaming services have killed record sales. If you want a #1 hit, pick a genre like jazz or classical, find a thousand friends to buy your physical record in a week and you’ve made it. You too can have a #1 hit and be as “good” as Coltrane or Yo-yo Ma.

I think Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Luis Borges started out that way. Publicists hawked copies out of the trunk of an old car./S

Whatever works.

The deep state has deep pockets. Pompeo is their darling, as is Haley.

She got in before he did though so I wonder if he will be allowed to.

Actually, I think Mike Pompeo should get a key cabinet job in the next Trump Administration.

As for Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Asa Hutcheson, and Mike Pence, they all need to find new jobs outside of the federal government.

He’s going to give them all away as Christmas presents. Yeah. That’s the ticket.

It doesn't have to be lap band. It could have been extreme dieting or other measures. Pompeo said he lost the weight in 6 months by doing just a 30 minute workout at home and eating healthier. It was said a year ago that this would be impossible at his age and we would know in about a year how he lost weight, because if he did it with unhealthy extreme dieting, it wouldn't be sustainable. It is starting to look like he is putting on the weight again. Smart move. The skinny Pompeo lost his mojo.

He couldn’t find friends or lobbyists to boost the book sales, so he had to do it himself? Sad.

My husband had a couple of books published by McGraw-Hill. We would buy cases from the publisher (I forget what the discount was) and we’d sell the books at the back of the room after my husband gave a talk. Or sometimes the host of the event would purchase the books from us to give to audience members.

I donated $150 to Herbert Cain’s campaign and received a signed copy of his book. Cain’s campaign had to purchase that book. I’m sure a lot of politicians purchase their own books to sell or give away.

That’s how all books written by politicians end up on the best-seller list. Between the PACs purchasing them and university libraries being required to purchase them, it adds up to a lot of books being sold. Most are paid for with our tax-dollars or political donations.

I’m still waiting for my copy. He’s one of the few that mostly escaped the Trump administration with their image relatively intact. Nikki was another one.

It is hard to believe that selling a mere 2100 copies of book will put it in the NYtimes best seller list, even at #3. I think a bare minimum would be 5-10k in a single week.

Reminds me of the scene in The Distinguished Gentleman where Olaf Anderson is reminding Dick Dodge about all the political favors he has done for him over the years. Among them is buying 10,000 copies of his “boring, dull-ass autobiography.” A true-to-life representation of the sleazy goings-on in Washington that continue to this day.
