Rolling Stone once covered rock and roll music and counted among its contributors Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Wolfe, and Matt Taibbi. This week, it platformed a defense of horizontal despotism and the mobbing of nonconformists.
The magazine, which paid out $1.65 million in 2017 for its part in a defamatory episode of cancel culture and previously ran a critique of efforts to "cancel Liz Cheney," published an article by LGBT activist Ernest Owens on Monday entitled, "Why Cancel Culture Is Good For Democracy."
Twitter CEO Elon Musk was among those who ridiculed the publication over the article, calling its defense of mob tyranny "obnoxious."
Owens downplayed in his article fears of the "angry mob instantly judging us and preparing to end our careers before they start," suggesting that "we are the people who make up the so-called mob."
After ostensibly identifying himself and his readers with the mob, Owens indicated that the character assassinations, censorship, and attacks on persons with whom activists disagree have simply been a matter of vigilante justice: "Cancel culture has leveled the playing field for those who can’t always rely on the government to protect them."

There was a time when being a badass rock star meant something. Do your own thing, question authority, absolute free speech without fear of repercussions and Rolling Stone was part of that culture. As I long suspected it was all a facade. It was 🐂💩 then and it’s 🐂💩 now. Only difference is now they let their true colors show. Rage Against the Machine? PFFFT! More like kiss the ass of the machine

Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated - all old-style magazines with a “brand” and name recognition among people 55+
Yet all went totally bankrupt, and all have no value in this internet age.
BUT - because of this brand recognition (as evidenced by the fact we here are still talking about them) still have value as propaganda outlets and social-engineering outlets, directed at this age cohort. And propaganda for content is very low cost.
So that’s why they still exist.

Cancel culture is often motivated by ideological or political biases, which are antithetical to pluralism and diversity. Rather than engaging in constructive dialogue and debate, cancel culture seeks to impose a single perspective or worldview on others.
Cancel culture can lead to self-censorship and conformity, which are detrimental to creativity and innovation. Rather than encouraging individuals to express their unique perspectives and ideas, cancel culture pressures them to conform to prevailing norms and values.
Cancel culture can create a climate of fear and insecurity, which are incompatible with freedom and autonomy. Rather than empowering individuals to make their own choices and decisions, cancel culture imposes external constraints and pressures on them.
The negative consequences of cancel culture on free speech, tolerance, justice, critical thinking, pluralism, creativity, and freedom are overwhelming and important.
Yup! Seems like only yesterday when quite a few a-hole celebs were anti vaxxers. And how the ACLU vigorously fought for the rights of parents who chose not to vaxx their kids. I still remember when Rosie O Dumbass claimed childhood vaxxes cause autism.

Democracy is an idealized form of government that a number of governments borrow from.
