20 states join bishops in condemning FBI memo profiling 'Latin Mass' Catholics

Missouri Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey and 19 other attorneys general joined Catholic Bishops protesting religious profiling in a leaked Federal Bureau of Investigation memo.

Last week, an FBI internal memorandum dated Jan. 23, was published by Undercover DC, an investigative journalism organization. It mentioned Virginia Catholics, specifically traditional Catholics, some of whom are not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, according to information from the Catholic Diocese of Richmond.

The attorneys general seven-page letter of complaint was addressed to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray. The letter states the FBI memo “identifies ‘radical-traditionalist Catholics’ as a potential ‘racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.’ … Among those beliefs which distinguish the bad Catholics from the good ones are a preference for ‘the Traditional Latin Mass and pre-Vatican II teachings,’ and adherence to traditional Catholic teachings on sex and marriage (which the memorandum describes as ‘anti-LGBTQ’).”

In 2021, Pope Francis ended pre-Vatican II Traditional Latin Masses, stating the liturgies were dividing the Catholic Church.

Last week, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Religious Liberty Chairman of the U.S. Catholic Council of Bishops, criticized the FBI memorandum. Dolan agreed with a statement made a day earlier by Bishop Barry Knestout of the Diocese of Richmond.

“Let me first be clear: anyone who espouses racism or promotes violence is rejecting Catholic teaching on the inherent dignity of each and every person,” Dolan’s statement said. “The USCCB roundly condemns such extremism and fully supports the work of law enforcement officials to keep our communities safe.

“I agree with my brother Bishop Barry Knestout that the leaked memorandum was nonetheless ‘troubling and offensive’ in several respects – such as in its religious profiling and reliance on dubious sourcing – and am glad it has been rescinded.

JustTheNews is also FactCheckFail.

The Pope opens the gates for Bishops to significantly curtail the Latin Mass, and some Bishops have indeed done so. But the vast majority haven't followed suit.

JustTheNews seems to be following in Gateway Pundit's footsteps of sloppy reporting.

Wherever Atheistic Communism rears its ugly head, the Catholic Church is the first to be victimized.

Communism and Catholicism are diametrically opposed. The Communists cannot take over a country completely where a strong Church exists.
Therefore, the Church and its faithful followers must be exterminated.

For instance: Russia, China, Cuba, Middle Europe, and every country that has been behind the Iron Curtain or the Bamboo Curtain.

We must learn from history, or history will be repeated.

Well I’m not sure what elaboration would elucidate what I’ve posted, and at the moment I’m not aware of any example that could be cited. But it’s obvious the term “full communion” would not be applicable to someone who has been advised he/she could not receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion due to continuous willful behavior that is prohibited by established Church doctrine.

Have seen the term used in an informal and loose way to refer to baptized individuals, already self-described Christians, individually discerning and fatefully making the One True leap of Faith (i.e., finally becoming Catholic).

You appear to be referring to purportedly backsliding individuals. That is, people who unequivocally were Catholics at some prior time, or who now say they are Catholics, or honestly consider themselves Catholics, but according to certain others suffer from some kind of categorical disqualification, leaving them on the outside, looking in, despite sincere protestations, or other types of claims they, or the group they are in, might make to the contrary.

Publicly pro-choice politicians who are cradle Catholics are typically not referred to as not being in full communion with the Church. They are (justifiably) being denied access to the Eucharistic Heart of the Holy Son of Mary because they are openly and notoriously in a state of mortal sin and are thus not properly disposed to receive same. Nobody would, for example, ever block such a politician’s access to their local parish for purposes of meeting the precept of Holy Mother Church that they assist at mass every Sunday or on other Holy Days of Obligation. That said, all unrepentant public sinners of all types who wisely do regularly attend mass are and should be regularly blocked from approaching the altar and receiving communion. By priests, by family members and friends who nevertheless still love them, by any other parishioner who has appropriate standing in the sinners’ eyes and is knowledgeable of the particular friendship-killing insult to God the Father.

To sum up, the One True Faith is the ultimate destination religion.

Once there, either from birth or by means of sincere sacramental conversion, it’s as if you are a Natural Born Citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven. Nobody can externally “dis-seize” you of that status but your foolish or heretical actions, taken deliberately according to your own free adult will, specifically amounting to apostasy, or objectively producing schism. By then it would be sugar coating things to refer to you as “not being in full communion” with Holy Mother Church. Your her enemy!

Absent specific apostasy or full-blown schism, Catholics who are nevertheless daily rejecting God by means of their freely made behavioral choices (amounting to mortal sin) are still in full communion with Holy Mother Church. It seems strange to think of things that way, but such baptized and confirmed individuals are always but one good sacramental confession away from transitioning from the darkness of death back into everlasting life. Not in full communion? They are not even (spiritually) breathing!

So I’ve heard, but it seems to beg the question of what does it matter, what meaning does it have, if such a person intends never to in any way relate to Holy Mother Church and in fact never does so for the remainder of his/her life? It would seem then to be a belief or teaching of the Church that is devoid of any actual meaning. Moreover, if such a person has decided to reject the Faith entirely and instead embraces the beliefs of Atheism, the Church’s “full communion” position relative to that person would appear to be what a reasonable person might justifiably refer to as ludicrous.

Thanks for replying.

The term “full communion” arguably enshrines a post-conciliar error that chronically overemphasizes participatory worship, “last supper” shared meals, horizontally-organized community, at the expense of personal wonder, reverence, depth of thought and contemplation, individual growth in holiness/sanctification. These latter goals or “faith-adjacent” behaviors, with which devout Catholics traditionally and naturally occupied themselves for two millennia, do not advance post-conciliar (false) ecumenism. Hence the concept of communion, not primarily personally and intimately with God himself, but instead with one’s earthbound co-religionists, with vanishingly little or even no vertical or heavenward focus, is emphasized as a primary end, in and of itself.

The term “full communion” is now simply being used as a cudgel used by those with weak faith to attack those with strong, authentic faith. Think about it—how often do you hear certain individuals, who eagerly throw that term at 100% faithful Catholics who exclusively attend Vetus Ordo masses every Sunday, stopping at nothing to tear down foundational moral teachings relating to marriage and to human sexuality?

“Full” nothing! They are “in full” attack mode against authentic Catholics. Once that group has been sufficiently marginalized or eliminated, they will begin spiritually brutalizing all fellow Catholics currently seeking maximum devoutness and reverence solely in the context of the Novus Ordo mass.

Referring to the Sacrament of Penance/Confession, instead as the Sacrament of Reconciliation, reflects a similar subtle shift in emphasis away from the vertical and toward the horizontal. What they are getting at, is that the individual members of the faithful should be seeking horizontal reconciliation with fellow humans in the Church community, crucially de-emphasizing what is infinitely more important—subjugating ourselves to the will of God (or, if you will, seeking vertical reconciliation).

Ummm... Alaska, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska are on the list. Last time I checked, they're all north of the Potomac River and are not part of the "South or West regions of the United States"

Those who set out to use the term “full communion” should be aware that it appears to have been minted in the context of a document on ecumenism that came out of the Vatican II council, and that the definition of the term therein accorded necessarily excludes the SSPX!:

Vatican II proves SSPX in FULL COMMUNION, Condemns Anti-SSPX Pope-splainers

To say that the SSPX is not in ‘full communion’ is to dissent from Vatican II. Not a good look for a pope-splainer
