MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Tuesday that Moscow was suspending its participation in the New START treaty — the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the United States — sharply upping the ante amid tensions with Washington over the fighting in Ukraine.
Speaking in his state-of-the-nation address, Putin also said that Russia should stand ready to resume nuclear weapons tests if the U.S. does so, a move that would end a global ban on nuclear weapons tests in place since Cold War times.
Explaining his decision to suspend Russia’s obligations under New START, Putin accused the U.S. and its NATO allies of openly declaring the goal of Russia’s defeat in Ukraine.
“They want to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on us and try to get to our nuclear facilities at the same time,” he said, declaring his decision to suspend Russia’s participation in the treaty. “In this context, I have to declare today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms.”
New START’s official name is The Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms.

Russia’s real problem is not with the West or NATO. The West is in the process of committing cultural suicide and there is absolutely no desire to invade Russia. Such invasions were a disaster for the French in the 19th century and the Germans in the 20th century. Russia’s real problem is China. Russia has an ineffective weak conventional military. China has long coveted its rich underpopulated Pacific territories and its Siberian treasure house. Only Russia’s nuclear arsenal preserves its borders. The Russian military knows it must develop innovative, limited, low yield nuclear weapons that can be deployed against a superior conventional force. Russia now has strategic difficulties for the remainder of this century and probably beyond.
Make no mistake. Putin made a disastrously catastrophic decision by invading Ukraine. He squandered the progress Russia made over the last thirty years rising from the soul crushing destruction of ninety years of communism. He has shown China that Russia is not capable of defending its territory without nuclear weapons.
Hard to say “what would have happened” but the outcome of WWI seems to have been a lasting Bolshevik revolution in Russia, the end of monarchies in much of Europe (replaced by socialism), and the eventual rise of fascism in Italy and Germany.
And the specifics of the actual outcome of WWI really derive from US assistance prior to 1917 and our outright engagement from 1917 on.
Question: Did the world benefit from US involvement in WWI? I say “No”. If Kaiser Wilhelm had won, things would likely have been better in the 20th century.
Should the US now have any involvement in Ukraine? I say “No”.
