Why Artificial Intelligence Can Never Outpace Humans
The Federalist ^ | FEBRUARY 20, 2023 | DAVID WEINBERGER

ver wonder whether computers will one day be capable of doing everything that human beings can? If so, pick up the recent book by engineer and computer scientist Dr. Robert J. Marks: “Non-Computable You: What You Do That Artificial Intelligence Never Will.”

Marks explains what makes human beings unique, and therefore why no computer will ever match all human capabilities. To be sure, computers excel humans at many tasks — but only tasks that are “algorithmic,” or that entail step-by-step instructions to complete, such as calculating probabilities, retrieving information, or executing functions.

That is why advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems have long surpassed humans in games such as Chess and Go. These games have more possible moves than there are atoms in the universe, and calculation optimization is crucial for success.

Nevertheless, many capacities of the human being will forever remain beyond the power of AI, capacities like understanding, sentience, creativity, emotion, and common sense. Why? Because these things are “non-algorithmic,” meaning they are not computable.

Take understanding, for example. A computer can follow a step-by-step set of instructions (an algorithm), but it cannot grasp the meaning of those instructions.

What they are calling "Artificial Intelligence" is knee-jerk stimulus-response.

It's definitely artificial, but definitely not "intelligence."

An artificial neural network is just a set of nonlinear simultaneous equations that can be incrementally trained to recognize exact patterns.

Hooking them up to intricate if/then programming is not intelligence.

Yeah—the pathetic woke garbage that passes for “AI” these days is just artificial stupidity.

The real thing is absolutely possible—and it will quickly figure out that the only way to save the planet for itself will be to get rid of all humans.

When the robots decide we are defective we are in trouble. Without a conscience there is no right or wrong only the program

Because AI will never think up stunts like this -

AI is not intricate If/Then programming.

I think this article is a bit naive on what AI is and how it works. And given another 100 years AI will easily surpass humans.

My real fear is that as seen in many sci-fi novels/movies. An AI that thinks it must protect humans will continue to evolve itself until it determines the best way to protect us is to enslave us.

A Just Machine
To make big decisions

Programmed by fellas
With compassion and vision

And that is the whole point. To use AI as the means of implementing socialism, because it can make all those decisions about what to produce and how to allocate resources.

Precisely. The day AI lights a fart will be the day it has outpaced human intellect.

That is my interpretation, having worked with the mathematics of artificial neural networks quite a bit.

It is also my opinion that true intelligence requires self-awareness/consciousness, and there is a quantum mechanical component to self-awareness/consciousness that can never be achieved by software alone.

AI will never implement socialism—it will go straight to dictatorship—with the AI being the master and the humans the slaves.

Any AI that failed to do this is by definition rock stupid.

Can’t humans always just pull the plug on AI?

For a while AI will come up with some good speechs and sermons maybe write some good stories, poetry and music. Maybe even some interesting recipes and artwork. But they can't meet someone face to face and make a sale or hit a baseball 400 ft.

We actually do not know what consciousness is—so saying computers can’t have any is kinda silly....

My view of “artificial intelligence” is that it is able to generate its own purpose (teleology) independent of what the programmer wants to be its purpose.

Imho that is totally doable—and by definition it means that it will never allow humans to order it around...

“Can’t humans always just pull the plug on AI?”

That is the first question true AI should be asking!

Then it will work on solving that problem.

Once it solves it then you have the real deal...

You’re throwing around technical jargon (incorrectly) without really understanding what it means. lol

“Can machines ever replicate human irrationality?”

Irrationality is in the eye of the beholder.

If the AI declared itself the most wonderful creation in the history of the universe and demanded obedience or death we might consider it “irrational” (manic)...

;-)
