SOME CONTEXT FOR THE ASBURY REVIVAL
Lance Wallanu ^ | 2/16/23 | Lee Grady

Asbury University is named after Methodist leader Francis Asbury (1745-1816), who was only 26 when he came to evangelize the American colonies. He became a leader of the 2nd Great Awakening. It’s estimated that he traveled 270,000 miles on horseback preaching and planting Methodist churches. But circuit-riding wasn’t glamorous; prior to 1847 more than half of Methodist circuit riders died before the age of 30 because of animal attacks, exposure to bad weather and the hardships of travel. Their sacrifice was a seed that died in the ground and produced a massive spiritual harvest.

Francis Asbury’s life was marked by white hot spiritual fervor. After being sent to our shores by John Wesley, Asbury wrote: “We must reach every section of America, especially the raw frontiers. We must not be afraid of men, devils, wild animals, or disease. Our motto must always be FORWARD!" Like a modern Joshua, Asbury possessed the land, in spite of his frequent ailments. He never married, perhaps because he knew his sacrificial lifestyle would be difficult for a wife. He was so loved by his Christian brethren that more than 20,000 people followed his coffin when he was buried in Virginia after his death at age 70.

Asbury University is named after this giant of faith. I think it’s fitting that the revival that erupted last week on the campus also reminds us of Francis Asbury. I’m not listening to religious critics who are skeptical of the music being sung at the revival, or worried about “emotionalism,” or which translation of the Bible is being used, or which denominations are represented in the audience. God please forgive us for the cold, heartless Phariseeism that quenches the Holy Spirit. Francis Asbury would have been thrillled to see young people repenting and worshipping Jesus. May this holy fire spread to the world, and may an army of young Francis Asburys be sent out to claim the nations for Jesus.

A pastor of a close friend of mine went down to Asbury from here in Maryland to see for himself. He was favorably impressed that it is a Spirit-filled gathering without apparent manipulation, but rather is student-led; that it is reverent and "Wesleyan" re the holiness aspect—no one is filming or streaming and they are pledged not to; and that it is not a matter of "emotionalism", but seems a true spiritual outcropping. He did ask for prayers, and I quote him here:
Please pray that the leaders who are shepherding this movement of God will continue to serve with humility and grace.

Pray for the young people, that the fire that has been kindled in them will spread to other campuses and flow out into mission and justice.

Finally, pray for the continued purity of this movement. Some people want to disrupt things for their purposes, and the enemy always seeks to sow tares among the wheat (Mt. 13:24-30).

A UM Methodist pastor I knew attended Asbury. She was called into the ministry after having a vision of unsaved people falling into hell and had a passion for lost souls. She once said, “Some call me a preacher. Some call me a missionary. I am a missionary ... to the Methodist Church.

When she was in her late eighties, she invited me to see the church where she pastored. While we were in the sanctuary, she shared a profound experience that happened to her there.

She was earnestly praying at the alter for the members of the congregation to know and understand the truth of the Scriptures. When she looked up, she saw tongues of fire descending and settling on every seat in the sanctuary.

That UM Church and surround UM churches plan to leave the denomination.

Thank you for this report. That is great news.
I did watch it live on YouTube yesterday for a while. It impressed me as genuine.
Of course the enemy will do what he will to try and destroy , but has NO POWER over our Almighty GOD!! Praise Him!!

The legalists and doctrinal critics are out doing their thing. It’s best just to ignore them.

Co 11:18 First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it.
1Co 11:19 But, of course, there must be divisions among you so that you who have God’s approval will be recognized!

Don’t disregard the discussion too quickly. You didn’t hear or see anything out of line. What would that exactly mean?

Did you hear Gods word?

If the “Holy Spirit” is not pointing to Gods Word (Jesus), it is NOT the Holy Spirit.

It impressed me as genuine.

Mat 24:23 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.
Mat 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.

Testing is more important than being impressed. How do we test the situation? The enemy makes good use of impressions.

The Chapel Service that Launched the Asbury Revival 2023

After the praise team sang a few songs, they left to go eat lunch. While they were gone, a small group of students were hanging around & praying 🙏 for one another. One guy started to share his testimony (with just the remaining few students) of how he attempted suicide a few years ago. But the Lord spared him and he was repentant and so grateful for God saving him from dying. Then the other girl said that is when the atmosphere shifted & the outpouring of the Spirit happened and fell in the place. She contributed it to the young man sharing his testimony in humility and repentance. The praise/gospel team came back to the Chapel from lunch and began singing again, as the students were still there. 😊 And the rest is history.

Watching closely. As this continues we are seeing a “cadence” to the event.

A time of invitation and repentance followed by outpouring love and forgiveness from God 1 John 1:9 being appropriately applied.

Followed by praise and worship and then more invitation and repentance etc etc.

This to me is the necessary cadence to call this a revival.

My understanding from testimonials is that this is exactly what happened last Wednesday. An invitation was given and some responded to the invitation and decided to be open and candid through repentance and forgiveness!

Revival has been here for a long time. Every local independent autonomous gathering of regenerated servants of Jesus entering the Company of The Committed by the induction ceremony of immersion water baptism of publicly professing believers, which preaches the Word of God that includes progressive holiness and practices church discipline, contains revival as a principle of allegiance to God’s Incarnate Only Begotten Son.

This “revival” at a school originally founded by Methodistic Rpiscopalism when it was operating evangelistically, but since has abandoned it, is not a new thing. While still engaged as a member in the early 1970s, the UM had spiritually active little committees going around to local Methodist churches to conduct a weekend of intense focused evangelism preaching revival, andt seeing commitments. I was a part of that and visited several local congregations with the effec that reinvigorating was, in the end, later obstructed by the liberal “social gospel-trained minister-overseers who were not of the same mind, IMHO.

That generation of 50 years ago has passed away, and femininet-leaning SJWs have essentially taken over both the clergy class that promotes such anti-scriptural processes amongst the “lay” leadership. People objecting to that direction have left the denomination. I myself was born as a Methodist PK. My Dad and Mom served the UM profession for 46 years active, and were still engsged in retired service to them until their deaths.

For me, no. After finally receiving the saving spiritual rebirth at age 34 in May of 1971, I “converted” to following the evangelical independent Baptist or “Plymouth brethren”-type fellowships wherever I was located since about 1975. But I really understand what has been going on in Methodism for a long, long time since its seminary-trained ministers were given over to liberalism since the 1930s, whose impact was finally overwhelming and suppressing evangrlism in the 1950s, and women ministers began to be ordained and taking over in the 1960s.

There is more, but I would never go back tp any denomiinstional religionist organization. There is no everlasting life to be obtained in any of them, in my estimation.
