NATO chief says Ukraine’s ammunition use outstripping supply

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned Monday that Ukraine is using up ammunition far faster than its allies can provide it and putting pressure on Western defense industries, just as Russia ramps up its military offensive.

“The war in Ukraine is consuming an enormous amount of munitions and depleting allied stockpiles,” Stoltenberg said. “The current rate of Ukraine’s ammunition expenditure is many times higher than our current rate of production. This puts our defense industries under strain.”

According to some estimates, Ukraine is firing up to 6,000-7,000 artillery shells each day, around a third of the daily amount that Russia is using almost one year into the war.

Speaking on the eve of a two-day meeting of NATO defense ministers, Stoltenberg said the waiting time for the supply of “large-caliber ammunition has increased from 12 to 28 months,” and that “orders placed today would only be delivered two-and-a-half years later.”

BS. Approaching 1T spent by US and Europe. I am sure the Ukrainians are selling the ammo on the black market.

The Ukrainians went through something like 2 million NATO supplied howitzer shells in less than 9 months.

They are burning through the NATO stockpiles so fast they have depleted about 25% of out war reserves and they have effectively worn out most of the filed artillery pieces we have provided to them due to excessive use.

This is unsustainable.

Never thought I’d see “Spray and Pray” with 155s

I guess it is OK when someone else is paying for the ammo.

Ukraine is using up the US and NATO war reserves, Biden is selling our oil reserves and Biden and his cronies are getting rich. Everything is great according to our DC Media.

Imagine what would happen if NATO had a real all out war with Russia? They would blow their load in 3-5 days, with no chance of resupply or manufacture- and our Pentagon knows this. Vlad’s resources ( metal, propellant, commodities, factories) are unlimited, and they have a very, very small supply line.

It is becoming all to clear:

Ukraine 1991-2023 RIP

Honestly, it doesn't matter. At that point, it'll go nuclear.

Not likely. Also, around 22:00 23:00, French General states they have two days of ammunition for a high intensity war, England stated three days and have an Army less than our Marines ( 60,000), Germany the worse off…NATO is kaput.

NATO is kaput.

Yep. But who's their main threat? The Brits and the French can nuke anybody who is going to try to invade them. (Ottoman Turks?)

That’s actually quite pathetic if true - regardless of what is going on in Ukraine and the merits and demerits thereof, that the entire Western military apparatus cannot produce any more ammo than this.

One thing I’ve thought is that by upping the intensity all along the line, it begs the defence to respond in kind. In high intensity areas they must be going through a crazy amount of ammo every day. The russians have no ammo supply problems, but can the ukrainian army keep up with this high rate?
