Some suburban Chicago shoppers will soon have one less option nearby to buy groceries and other goods: Walmart.
According to a Wednesday announcement from the retail giant, Walmart will including one of the company's first pick-up store in Lincolnwood, located at 6840 N. McCormick Blvd. The other two closures are planned for the Plainfield Walmart, at 12690 S. Route 59, and Homewood, at 17550 S. Halsted St.
“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Homewood, Lincolnwood, and Plainfield locations. We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com,” the company said in a statement.
The Walmart store in Lincolnwood will close by Feb. 17, a report from the Chicago Tribune says. The other two locations are set to close Mar. 10.
In a Facebook post, the village of Flossmoor detailed the letter it was sent by the corporate affairs division of Walmart, informing the community of its plans to close the store.
"This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a thorough review process," the letter reads. "We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, this specific store hasn’t performed as well as we hoped. There is no single cause for why a store closes - our decision is based on several factors, including historic and current financial performance, and is in line with the threshold that guides our strategy to close underperforming locations."
Thank you for your informative replies. I was picturing the teenage girl pocketing a lipstick, etc.
What does Chicago expect when they shoot them up and steal anything not nailed down....Chicago’s like one big brown ganster city.....”Bumpy Johnson” finally got it all. Tsk!
Shoplifting is a felony everywhere if you steal over a certain dollar amount. The amount that is set dividing misdemeanor and felony theft varies by state.
Will County. Still, it shouldn’t be a surprise, as guvmint housing has been increasing in the burbs, gradually making them ‘little chicagos’. I have kin in the SW suburbs.
Yep.....serves low-income and a lot of people who like to cause trouble, steal and loot. They end up creating an urban desert about which they get complaints of ‘racism’ because they have to shop at high-markup quick stop stores.
Up next, complaining about food deserts and white flight.
It is a multi-faceted problem and there is a lot of pressure on big box stores to show a profit.
High labor/operation costs, high taxes, theft/loss, and online shopping has great increased operational costs to the point where more companies are going to close down marginal stores. This is especially true given the current economic forecast/outlook with inflation and supply chain disruptions.
There is another storm on the horizon...... the China/Taiwan conflict. Talk about “supply chain disruptions” for Walmart!
But, but FOOD DESERTS!
A Walmart in Pinellas Park off of U.S. 19 is closing.

Love that. Ain't seen dat beefoe. Will use it freely.
They’ll just hit other stores.
The Plainfield IL store is just south of Naperville, and in very close proximity to a Target, a Meijer, Costco, and several smaller boutique and grocery stores in an area where the overwhelming majority of the local populace can easily afford to shop those stores.
In fact, that location recently held a “Grand Re-opening” to celebrate a major renovation intended to give it a more upscale feel. It looks like they were trying to punch above their weight and just couldnt land enough blows.
There are also at least 5 other Walmart locations within 10 miles of that store.
Shoplifting over a specific amount is a felony in many states...including Illinois.
Here’s a quick look at the penalties for shoplifting in Illinois: Class A misdemeanor: If the property’s value is $300 or less. Class 4 felony: If the property’s value is $300 or less but you have a prior conviction or you used an emergency exit to shoplift.
Here is something to know, Doc: Ignorance is no defense with respect tot he law.
Foxx ignored the law and stated that she will not prosecute shoplifters as felons unless they stole more than $1,000.00 in merchandise.
********
So, I’m sure Foxx sends the information on to the IRS so that the perp will pay income tax on the value of the stolen merch - since it’s over that magic $600 amount the Fed has decided must be enforced.
“Shoplifting is a felony everywhere if you steal over a certain dollar amount.”
Hopefully the lawmakers will stay asleep at the switch and inflation will turn previous misdemeanors into felonies for the same items.
Our family fled the coming storm in Chicago in 1953.
LOL I see your point. $401 for a pack of gum with ‘discount’ - good one Danny...
That said, Florida’s NOT a criminal friendly state.
If protesters are blocking the road and we feel threatened, we’re allowed to keep driving. DeSantis isn’t a push over.
Soon to be food deserts.
