Yahoo plans to lay off more than 20% of its total workforce, affecting nearly half of its ad tech employees by the end of the year CEO Jim Lanzone said the layoffs are not due to financial challenges, but rather changes to the Yahoo for Business advertising unit With the announcement, Yahoo is just the latest in a string of technology companies to announce layoffs

The move comes as many advertisers have pared back their marketing budgets in response to record-high inflation rates and continued uncertainty about a recession.

With the announcement Thursday, Yahoo is just the latest in a string of technology companies to announce layoffs, wiping out thousands of jobs that pay a combined $12 billion annually.

Yahoo was bought out by private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $5billion in 2021, along with its one-time rival AOL.

I remember when AOL bought Time-Warner with a stock swap. Back in the 1990s, I think it was.

Imagine buying Time-Warner with AOL shares.

Back in the day Google offered to sell their technology to Yahoo for a few million. Yahoo declined. A few years later (2002) they again offered to sell to Yahoo but for a billion. Again the visionaries of Yahoo declined.

Yahoo who? I haven’t knowingly used any of their services in years. I didn’t know Apollo owned them. I see Verizon still has a 10% stake if the report is accurate.

All of these esteemed employers should be banned from the H1B lottery for at least 2 years. Employers should not be given the opportunity to use labor arbitrage after throwing employees out the door.
