US general to aggressors: Allies are battle-ready in Asia
Associated Press ^ | February 9, 2023 | JIM GOMEZ

American forces and their allies in Asia are ready for battle after years of joint combat exercises, a United States general said Wednesday, adding that Russia’s setbacks in Ukraine should serve as a warning to potential Asian aggressors like China and North Korea...Although Asia has no counterpart to NATO, the 30-nation military alliance whose mostly European members vow to defend each other against external attacks, a network of U.S. treaty alliances and defense partnerships upholding the international order provides a regional safeguard, he said.

Our alliance in the South Pacific is also larger than most people realize.

The keys to containing China are India and Japan. There’s this notion that we would have to face off against China alone, but the reality is that China has been so antagonistic toward everyone in the region that they are surrounded by enemies and potential enemies. They have no friends other than Russia, and that is just a temporary marriage of convenience. They will turn on Russia as well once they feel they are no longer useful.

This idea of China’s hegemonic inevitability is a real stretch, driven by their baseless boasting and sabre rattling. There is zero chance that they could fight a multi-front war against the U.S., Japan, South Korea, India, etc. It would be a challenge to herd all of those cats into a willing coalition, but the more recklessly belligerent China acts, the easier that job becomes.

Of course, the biggest question mark is leadership in the U.S., which is currently non-existent.

We have leadership in the U.S. but it’s rogue, corrupt, and belligerent. And unpredictable.

Good question. My bet is some sort of blockade of Taiwan. Declare it anyway, and dare people to defy it. All merchant shipping would then be blocked outright by the insurers. Any sailings will then have to be guaranteed (insured) by governments, and go escorted. The Japs and the USN will have to organize “Malta Convoys” to Taiwan, and dare the Chinese to attack them.

I see signs that the US military is now operating under its institutional protocols and is not under tight political control.

That can be good or bad. Given the quality of executive leadership at the moment that’s probably to the good, for a while.

Larger yes, but also under equipped. Their all star bench is very shallow.

China at war will establish a war of attrition. The allies are not prepared for that. And that is the fault of the USA.

You nailed every point! Well done!

Particularly about how China always makes enemies among its neighbors. China has done that for thousands of years.

All that said, China will still move ahead with its plans for world domination because it believes that's its destiny.

Fighting mostly stopped in Afghanistan and we surrendered... Pathetic.

We lost credibility and emboldened all our allies. This is why Putin invaded Ukraine. We show weakness every day. The Chinese are laughing at us.

I doubt the Chinese can attrit given what the USAF and USN intend to do.

The USN is not going to sail into harms way without need.

They are going to shoot at targets of opportunity with long range weapons, with the intention of wiping out the Chinese Navy and whatever airforce assets present themselves.

The Chinese will have to set up a Hobsons choice situation where the USN can be drawn in.

They are, that.

Cue the several years old commercial of the Chinese in the lecture room talking about how they own us b/c of our debt. And then laughing about it.

Ratta Tat Tat
Hear that? That is the drumbeat for a war.
Washington and the other western ‘democracies’ have decided they need a war to save their economies. Or what is left of their economies. Plus hostilities is another way to tighten their control of the population.

Exactly what China has done with its weather balloon incursion.

China is surely very frightened by the fact that the US Armed Forces have finally arrived at full pronoun compliance so that “trans” and “non binary” troops will never again feel marginalized or mis-gendered.

?
That doesn’t seem to be it, re the balloons. That seem more like EW/SIGINT recon to ID emitters, intercept signals, etc. Balloons instead of satellites because... I don’t know, just speculating. China doesn’t have the bases to run EW aircraft where it wants to (ubiquitous in the USAF) or can’t use satellites because of inverse square law trouble, etc.

Anyway, those balloons aren’t going to force the USN to sail in harms way.

A real Hobsons choice would be if it forces the USN and the Japs to run convoys to Taiwan.

*This idea of China’s hegemonic inevitability is a real stretch*

Think again. A billion and a half people. They all gotta go somewhere. Infiltrate the 3rd world countries with business deals then send students to the west. Last think: Siberia is pretty big and Russia is depleting a lot of their military people and equipment ninth Ukraine.

We might just be better off having them take over the Middle East-all of it. Let them treat it like they treat Tibet. How many Tibetan terrorists out there?
