” as well as Russia’s tactic of sending generals into the field.”

That’s the ticket.

Lack of trust and delegation.
No professional NCO corps.
No trust in junior officers.
No skills in C3.
Shitty logistics.
Makes a weak military.
That is what scares them as they are
structured the same way.
All your plans change when the first punch is thrown.

American military would have rolled across Ukraine.

Japan sits at US politicians’ feet and sucks toes to get a pat on the head.

Thus, propaganda.

Putin’s way of culling the perfumed princes from his military?

All your points are good but I would add one more CORRUPTION!

Corruption is built into the system and it goes back to the old Soviet Union. The higher the pecking order the more you can skim off the top. The problem is two fold, the money allocated for something gets smaller as it passes through many hands and so when it does reach the end, there is not enough money to do the job. Second is those at the top don’t want to hear bad news so the guys at the bottom lie to those at the top.

Military decisions are being made by people who have no idea the state of their equipment or the training of the troops.

We won all of the “Police” actions, Politics caused defeat.
I remind us all, WWII was the last war we fought. Only congress can declare war.

With nothing left for any other action in the rest of the world.

Yup, head of Russian military Sergei Shoigu's daughter "owns" a 18 million dollar palace outside Moscow.

Further, there are a lot of dead Russian Colonels and Lt Colonels. Senior officer ranks have been decimated. How severely?

We’ll see. There are the old retired men who might be thrown into the breech but not knowing what’s what, that might not be good either.

Amen........ there is no way to measure the harmful effects of corruption.

We see reports of worthless body armor having fake ceramic chips and I think fake kevlar. we see reports of field communication radios that are all monitored and that make targets of the users. We hear reports of artillery having old barrels that are further worn out to the pint of inaccuracy endangering friendly troops. We see very old and outmoded tanks fielded to replace those lost in the early days.

We hear phone calls home lamenting the fact there are no officers ever present among the troops

I was not saying that we do such a thing, I don’t even think we need to be in Europe anymore. I was just expressing how we operate is pretty efficient.

Constitutionally, the only standing military authorized is the Navy. For variety of reasons Congress re-authorizes the Army and Air force every few years, but that is not Constitutionally mandated. That is a political choice.
I think it all should be put under the Navy.
so all we have are Sailors and Marines.
States have reserve units.
Full disclosure; USAF 1973-1978.

If you’re not all in, you’re just f%&king about in a military manner. Senior officers in the field get in the way, and are a pain to deal with. They belong in the rear, with the gear.

Yes, an outwards facing military would be better. It is not like a destroyer could be a threat to our domestic liberty.

“skills in C3”

It’s called C4 now, Command, Control, Communications, and Computers.

Not to be confused with C-4 or Composition C-4, plastique, RDX...

I’ve always thought it a good thing for a few Generals to catch it. They’re sending other guys out to their deaths, this gives them some skin in the game.
