Egg prices rose to record highs in December. A dozen large Grade A eggs had more than doubled in price during 2022, on average. A historic outbreak of bird flu in the U.S. disrupted egg production and supply, economists said. Wholesale egg prices have fallen by more than 50% since December, according to Urner Barry data. Retail egg prices may soon follow, but it’s not a sure thing.

Wholesale prices have fallen from 5.41 a month ago to 2.61 yesterday. Still above the long term average, but the free market has responded well to price incentives, and is producing more eggs.

The transgendered hens quickly figured out that their future opportunities were quite limited, apart from eye-laying.

The wholesale price has fallen by more than 50% from the peak, but retailers are still selling the expensive inventory. Prices should get better at stores soon, or it really WILL be price gouging.

A dozen Jumbo Eggs here, is still $8.99, so I’ll use the ones up I have in the ‘fridge, to wait out any price drop.

Entire flocks were destroyed due to flu.

New replacement chicks can only grow so fast to laying status.

Everyone needs to think this thru a little.

Have people responded to the market by producing more eggs or has the market responded by consumers buying far less eggs, which increases the supply causing the price to drop.

True is, it’s probably some of both, yes producers are rapidly trying to increase supply, 40 million chickens were killed because of bird flu, it takes a lot longer than a few months to replace them, it will probably be 12-18 months at a minimum before we see tangible results from their actions.

Consumers can stop buying eggs immediately or much more quickly than producers can ramp up the number of chickens laying eggs.
