Henrietta, N.Y. — In response to the numerous thefts of Kias and Hyundais, both in our area and nationwide, Rep. Joe Morelle sent a letter to those car manufacturers demanding action.
A quick guide on how to steal a Kia or Hyundai through viral TikTok challenges is what jumpstarted this trend.
The target audience for these challenges, is children and teens -- and this is starting to raise some concerns among lawmakers.
According to the Rochester Police Department, 116 of the first 168 cars stolen in 2023 were manufactured by Kia or Hyundai.
Certain models of those cars more vulnerable to theft because they lack an immobilizing system.
Morelle said both Kia and Hyundai are way behind their competitors and need to catch up.
"Only 26 percent of their models have safety devices, whereas 96 percent of automakers have made adjustments to improve the security," said Morelle.
The issue of these cars being stolen has become so bad that in certain parts of the county, some of America's largest auto insurers are not issuing new policies to people who own certain models.
Morelle announced Saturday he has sent a letter to both automakers asking them take accountability and help fix the issue even temporarily.

To the manufacturer: Make it harder to steal your vehicles!
To the lawmaker: Make it harder to get away with stealing vehicles!
Guess which side I’m taking?!?
Like the women that was raped and blaming the way she dresses or the time of day or night she decides to venture out of the house.
The reason they think this way is because they all have a cranial defect that was forced upon them by their mother in the womb
What? And tell the feral youths to stop stealing cars? Pssshaw
I call Morelle the “cross eyed slug” he looks like a horrid version of Buddy Hackett
There is usually a section of every large town where you can take your car and have it stolen, on purpose, if you can’t keep up the payments........................
WUT ABOUT DA HOODIES?
Punishing law breakers is mean, unfair and expensive so it must be the manufacturer’s fault. /S
The market should take care of itself here:
- if a car is ridiculously easy to steal, thieves will steal them.
- once consumers realize this, they will buy other brands.
- manufacturers will figure this out and rectify the problem
Update: Kia is offering engine immobilizer kits for models impacted... thanks to a lawsuit, but hey... that’s part of the market at work, right? They’ve also made them standard starting with the 2022 model year.
Ergo: politicians need to butt out. Again.
Uh, why not focus on identifying, prosecuting, and jailing the criminals? THAT IS THE PROBLEM and not whether a particular car has good or bad security. Car owners can always purchase and install a security system if they are unhappy with the delivered features on their car.
Joe “Moron” seems to have it wrong - isn’t it the government that should be keeping law and order and not the car companies?
Don't bother reciting "law" to me, because THAT is no longer a factor.
Make them harder to steal?? Any car can be stolen. Bet half were unlocked.
Might be cheaper to offer a special pouch on the driver side door that holds a snub-nosed .38 ...
Yup. Blame the gun, blame the car. Never hold the individual accountable. Pathetic.
Severe punishment would end all this crap.
It only stands to reason that if guns shoot people, cars get themselves stolen.
That’s the ticket! We don’t a crime problem, we have a problem with manufacturers.
I expected this to be from the Babylon Bee...
Cleveland, Ohio had a reported 459 thefts of Kias and Hyundais in December of 2022. One 14 year-old is linked to 26 thefts.
Only produce manual transmission cars.
