Turkey has been hit by a second massive earthquake, hours after an earlier catastrophic quake devastated the region and killed more than 1,700 people.
The 7.8-magnitude night-time tremor, followed hours later by a slightly smaller one, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.
The later 7.5 magnitude quake struck at 1.24pm (1024 GMT) two-and-a-half miles southeast of the town of Ekinozu and around 60 miles north of the first quake that has wrought devastation across Turkey and Syria.
Hundreds are still trapped under rubble on both sides of the border as a result of the first, and the toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through mounds of wreckage for families crushed in their sleep.
Orhan Tatar, an official from the Turkish disaster agency, told reporters that the two quakes were independent of each other. He said hundreds of aftershocks were expected after both. Tremors were felt as far away as Greenland.

this earthquake is not God's doing...
Hating on NATO?!?!? What are you smoking? This is about his post #17. Lots of others have questioned it, too, and for the same reason.
You seem to be cut from the same cloth, though, judging by your post #95. Worship NATO all you please. Imagine to yourself that your nasty little god delights in smiting people whose leaders do things you don’t like. We still have freedom of religion here. So long as you don’t claim to be a Christian — hateful childish stuff like that gives us Christians a bad name.
Maybe my #117 hit you a little too close to home? Maybe you have elevated NATO to religious significance and your worship is also misplaced if you think God Himself would smite helpless little babies and little old ladies in Turkey because of NATO. Nah, it’s easier to go off on me and claim I was “hating on” NATO just because I don’t think one should worship it to the point one thinks think God should smite innocents over it. Funny how haters always think it’s others who are doing the hating.
Who shrink I wrapped your soul? What a nasty thing to say. Freezing babies trapped under rubble and you write this?
Risklayer raises their death toll estimate to 29,000.
Lord, have mercy. That’s heartbreaking.
I think the toll population-density wise will be even worse in Syria than in Turkey.
Syria has asked Israel for help . Go back to your glee over death and pain, warpig.
Oh no. Your post was like a punch to my heart, but thanks for letting us know. Prayers up.
29,000. Unimaginable suffering. Devastating news. I am lost for words.
With the cold weather, time is running out for the folks trapped in the rubble.
Your post 117 is clearly hating on Ukraine and NATO. But at least you know a lot about Russia, isn’t that what you said there?
I know. That’s why I have tears in my eyes. Still praying for them.
Go sober up. There is no hating on NATO in my post. Any sane and sober person of good will can see that.
Poland is sending Search and Rescue team to Gaziantep.
Good on the Poles as the Queries would say. At least some good news! I read the Israelis are all so sending teams. All I can do is keep praying — and I include the rescue teams in my prayers.
tell that to sodom and gomorrah
Uh oh. Spellchecker got me again. Aussies not queries.
I’m not going to miss any of the victims. These are the same people that keep Erdogan in power.

According to the NYT, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Greece and India are sending teams to Turkey to help. Meanwhile, we in the US are “assessing” our “response options”.
