At this point I am almost convinced that a war with the cartels has become the only option.

As we knew the plan all along:
Fentanyl Flow to the United States - DEA.gov

“Currently, China remains the primary source of fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances trafficked through international mail and express consignment ....”
and

The Heritage Foundation,By Hans A. von Spakovsky March 2, 2019.

What is the source of the synthetic opioid, abuse of which leads to this senseless loss of life? China is the principal culprit.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has identified China as the primary source of illicit fentanyl and the painkiller’s analogues that enter our country.

Drug traffickers use two primary techniques for delivering fentanyl manufactured in China: It is either shipped directly into the U.S. via international mail or shipped into Mexico to be smuggled into America.

Fentanyl is a unique drug in several ways. The profit margin is remarkable: A $3,000 investment can produce $1,500,000 in earnings.

A laboratory-made drug, fentanyl requires less time and space to produce than its agricultural counterpart, heroin. Chemists can manufacture fentanyl in small labs and use easy shipment methods.

The amount of fentanyl necessary to produce its painkilling effect is so small that manufacturers can ship it in ordinary packages such as envelopes used for ordinary letters.

Cheap production isn’t the only economic benefit suppliers have on their side. Fentanyl is said to produce a better high and be more addictive and potent than heroin (50 to 100 times more powerful).

This poison isn’t affecting only addicts. In some cases, first responders have inhaled airborne fentanyl, resulting in a contact overdose.

Agreed. Government is a necessary evil. Sometimes you need to do things like rounding up Fentanyl dealers and execute them by using the firing squad.

I don’t agree with all Libertarian positions myself, but in a Libertarian run society these addicts wouldn’t be given government funds like SSI to blow on drugs. Which means any drug users would have to be self supporting, so people like in this article who let themselves go to that extent wouldn’t be able to afford drugs in the first place.

The cartels own the voting program in all the Southern States. They own the machines, the suppliers, and the appointed election authorities no matter what party. Look closely at Arizona as a leading example.

100% because of fentanyl? Or perhaps there are additional contributing factors?

Here's a quote: “The Medical Examiner’s Office is now struggling with the issue of storing bodies because the fentanyl-related death toll continues to climb,” Dr. Faisal Khan, the public health director for Seattle and King County, explained in a recent Board of Health meeting

The cartels aren’t running the open borders show.
It’s the Jewish, Lutheran and Catholic fake charities and NGOs who are responsible.
The cartels are just the muscle.

I’ll never understand why anyone would want to put this poison in their body. Never.

————-

Nor will I. I have a nephew who has been in prison, homeless, can’t keep a job, all because of drugs.
I can’t even let him visit because I just can’t trust him. He’s nice enough on the rare occasions I see him, but I just don’t trust him.

Prescription opioid drugs have gone down by over 60% from peak in 2012. So the increased ODs are NOT due to prescription opioids.
The people dying today and over the past 10 years are predominantly the young and they were never started on opioid for acute or chronic pain. So it’s not a case of people getting addicted to prescriptions and going on to fentanyl.

That said you need to understand the iron rule of prohibition. As enforcement gets harder and the supply of illegal drugs becomes scare, the drugs get harder.
During alcohol prohibition, alcohol consumption went from beer and wine to high proof liquor. The obvious reason is that it’s cheaper and safer for drug dealers to ship highly concentrated drugs or alcohol than weaker drugs and alcohol.

Drugs are big business for government. DEA and prisons would have much less work if there was less enforcement.

The other thing is that the drug trade is still primarily conducted in US dollars. This creates demand for dollars and without that demand the dollar would be even weaker.

Then with all this money at stake, you’ve got to consider that politicians and Fed agencies are getting money indirectly from cartels and the money laundering banks

People need to wake up. The government is benefiting from the war on drugs and have been for years.

admit there's no end in sight for the epidemic.

Stop calling it an epidemic and recognize the source of the problem. It’s intentional murder. The co-conspirators are China, Mexican cartels, Democrat and RINO politicians.
