Ron DeSantis pushes permanent Florida sales-tax exemption for gas stoves

Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and a likely 2024 candidate for president, delivered on an earlier promise Wednesday when he said new gas stoves — in fact, all gas appliances — should be exempt from his state’s sales tax.

DeSantis rolled out the first budget of his second term, and among the proposed breaks for taxpayers is a $7 million permanent exemption on appliances fueled by combustible gas, such as natural gas propane, butane, liquefied petroleum gas and syngas.

The move comes as the debate over gas stoves has heated up in recent weeks. In an interview with Bloomberg in early January, an official from the Consumer Product Safety Commission talked about the possibility of a ban on the sale of gas stoves, which some studies have found produce emissions that contribute to climate change and also pose health risks inside the home.

The official, Richard Trumka Jr., later tweeted: “To be clear, CPSC isn’t coming for anyone’s gas stoves. Regulations apply to new products. For Americans who CHOOSE to switch from gas to electric, there is support available — Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes a $840 rebate.”

The CPSC later walked back its comments, but the agency also said it would conduct more research this year.

I lived on the 1st floor of an old house a while back.
The heat was adequate but on those really cold days i had to turn the gas oven on to keep us warm.
Thanks Gov D

I understand his intentions and they are good. But this is just another example of government picking winners and losers. Even though I would fall into the winner’s category if I lived in Florida and needed to buy a stove, I am dead set against this.

I appreciate that sentiment, and if this happened in a vacuum, I would definitely feel as you describe. However, in this instance, DeSantis is only responding to a different government agent, a federal one, the National Product Safety Commission, as mentioned in the article.

So this is a battle between governments, one state, one federal. And in this case, I side with the state.

I side with the Florida and DeSantis as well. I get the context. I am between a rock and a hard place. To me it is a matter of sacrificing principle to achieve a righteous objective.

I’ve got a gas log for that, but being able to cook food easily if power is out is a big deal.

We've had to do that once here in the 4+ years being in Central Texas. Now need to figure out how to power the HVAC fan so that the furnace can run when the power is out.

BTDT. Have a generator, can run the HVAC controls and fan.

The GOPe falls into two categories. One does not believe the ubiquitous and diverse cheating is real the other is okay with it. No one in the party leadership has said a single election was stolen in last 6 years, not one.

Pretty much NEVER.

Of all the ones you listed, all but 1 or 2 are straight up RINOs.

And if you’re kemp you’re owned by Hollywood and EV companies.

Respectfully, my FRiend, would you mind listing who is, and who is not a "straight up" RINO?

My cursory count differs from yours, however there are many with whom I have little familiarity.

TIA

How about lowering taxes across the board rather than picking and choosing? Because gas stoves are the latest controversy and DeSantis’s consultants advised him it would be a great PR move. Hey Gov, how about eliminating toll booths from state roads that have long paid for themselves?

This is the government version of that old playground trick where the bully fakes you with a fist in the air saying “Watch the airplane,” then socks you in the gut with the other fist saying “But look out for the submarine.”

Well we’re all busy watching the gas stoves and thinking about water heaters and other gas appliances the agencies are already talking internally about shutting off and dismantling the Natural Gas Distribution infrastructure.

You read it here first.

Everyone of them is a RINO but DeSantis and Huckabee Sanders.

As for DeSantis, I’m not one of his fanboys like others. To each his own.

From my perspective, what sets him part from all the others, he’s not doing anything spectacular. But he is actually doing something. That something being what NONE of the others do.

For example….he is or is in the process of suing the Biden administration for not enforcing immigration law. Awesome. There are 23 states controlled by Republicans across the board. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM SHOULD BE IN ON THAT SUIT.

If you’re bored, take a quick look at the Tennessee legislature suing the Obama admin for forcing the states to pay Medicare payments for refugees. They had him. Case was tossed. Why? Judge states that the Tennessee legislature had no STANDING because neither the Governor nor the AG signed into the lawsuit. Legislature had to hire private counsel.

Every Governor on that list, to include DeSantis, should be redoing that suit, with all of them suing.

They don’t…..RINOs
