American aid worker Pete Reed killed in Ukraine while helping civilians under fire, groups say

Humanitarian worker and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Pete Reed was killed while aiding civilians in Bakhmut, Ukraine, on Thursday, according to his family and two medical aid groups he worked with. Reed, who served two deployments as a Marine rifleman in Afghanistan, founded the nonprofit Global Response Medicine in 2017.

In a statement, the organization said, "Pete was the bedrock of GRM, serving as Board President for 4 years. In January, Pete stepped away from GRM to work with Global Outreach Doctors on their Ukraine mission and was killed while rendering aid."

Andrew Lustig, the founder and president of Global Outreach Doctors USA, said Reed was working with them as the country director for Ukraine.

"Pete was actively aiding in the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians when his evacuation vehicle was hit with a reported missile in Bakhmut, Ukraine on Feb 2, 2023," Lustig said in a statement. "...Pete's death underscores the devastation war has on innocent civilians, and highlights the importance of humanitarian and medical aid for affected communities. GoDocs is committed to carrying out this work around the world in honor of Pete."

It’s amazing how all the foreigners that are captured or killed on the Ukrainian front lines are cooks, truck drivers or medics.

"in Bakhmut, Ukraine on Feb 2, 2023"

I think I see the problem here...

Interesting name for a Non-Governmental Organization. “I work for G.O.D.” “I am The Man from G.O.D.” “You might say I am G.O.D.’s Top Dog.”

The did great on the name Global Outreach Doctors but they dodged a bullet with the name Global Response Medicine. What if they had called Global Emergency Response Medicine?

Not to deny his bravery but me thinks that his more than that. In over 75% of cases involving a person in his situation may well see his pay thru State regardless of his job agency.

“Was probably murdered by Ukrainians looking to take his wallet.”

Likely.

Very sad. I’ve seen too many of these make-up-your-own-NGO and pay-yourself-to-have-an-adventure folks get themselves into serious trouble or even killed. Yes, it’s fine, perhaps even noble, go want to help those in danger and distress, but please work for a legitimate organization with established channels and protocols. You can’t help anyone from the grave after all.

Especially since the Marines have no medical personnel. All medical personnel attached to the Marines are Navy.

I don’t think he necessarily helped as a medic, “aiding in the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians when his evacuation vehicle was hit”.

“The former US Marine Corps rifleman served in two tours in Afghanistan before starting humanitarian work in his home country and abroad, his organisation said.

Mr Reed worked in Haiti, Poland, Syria and Yemen.

He also worked with medics in the Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi special forces against ISIS militants during the battle for Mosul.”

Over 20 years of war has been bad for America. A class of war lovers is out there. They seek conflict like other kids look for an antenna or cliff to parachute off of. You see it in the new pickup trucks... seems like every other one is flat olive green or desert tan. Every third guy is sporting their “operator” beard.
The gun stores suck anymore too. I used to enjoy walking through stored or a gun show. You could sometimes find a nice older gun, a minty old Smith and Wesson or Colt. A nice early rifle. Last two I walked into was an endless row of soul less block rifles. And the display cases were filled with identical black pistols. Everything was festooned with tacticool and war fighting gear.

These wars have done some damage here at home and launched a fetish. That fetish claimed the life of this guy. Anything for a war selfie with a beard.

Every deer rifle is a skeletonized sniper rifle clone. Youtube abounds with videos of guys with such rigs blasting an elk from 800 yards or whatever and having it tumble down a cliff.
They aren’t hunting, they are pretending to be snipers.

Every sane society knew that war was very bad for the home front. That seems to have been lost as an idea.

LOL - US Marine Corp rifleman, has been around the world, now with an NGO, coincidently at the site of the most intense fighting in the entire war.

Oh, and there hasn’t been a “civilian” anywhere near Bakhmut in at least 8 months. The place has been under constant shelling since the summer.

This guy is “sheep-dipped.”

this is the propaganda used to cover-up American casualties there.

Yes, they all seem to have a plausible story, this one with a particularly humanitarian angle.

Yes, they showed up in force in former Y back in the day, mostly in BiH once NATO deployed after all the fighting was over. When you had to pass through UN checkpoints, only the legit humanitarian organisations got through, and the make-up-your-own NGO nutters were kept out.

That said, there were a few shoestring types that filled overlooked niches and they were let in. These were good people and knew their stuff and never got into trouble. One was a legit Dutch-American medical doctor and then there was a a nice older British Quaker couple who distributed much-needed school supplies in the UNTAES Region.

I remember reading about some make-up-your-own NGO fools in Libya right after the mob murdered Gaddafi. A couple of idiots giving out used clothing (like that’s what the people really needed) and some grifter who held “peace conferences” — he was a real piece of work. Took pictures of himself supposedly talking with villagers (although he did not speak the language) for his lame website begging donations from his church and others. Like that was doing anyone any good. Anyway, both got into serious trouble and were begging for the UN or the Americans to come save them. Well, the UN barely had any presence there and why should our guys have to help these fools? I don’t recall any longer what became of them, but I think they got out okay finally.

Some of these people mean well, but have no clue what they are doing and get themselves in trouble, even killed. Some are grifter types or unstable people hoping to make heroes or saints out of themselves. All are liabilities to themselves and to the professionals in theater and whoever they imagine should rescue them from their folly.

If one wants to help, better to donate to a legit humanitarian organization — and check those out carefully. Some are fairly useless and some quite good.
