Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took aim at college and university diversity programs during an event in Bradenton Tuesday.
DeSantis, speaking at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, announced a proposal to strip funding for all diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs as well as critical race theory...
DeSantis has crusaded against...CRT, defined by Oxford Languages as “a set of ideas holding that racial bias is inherent in many parts of Western society, especially in its legal and social institutions, on the basis of their having been primarily designed for and implemented by white people.”
....DeSantis and other conservatives have long argued that critical race theory, and diversity, equity and inclusion programs are racially divisive and discriminatory...
Marvin Dunn, a Black historian and...a vocal critic of the governor’s stance on DEI and CRT, said DeSantis has “touched a live wire in the American soul.”
...Legal analyst David Weinstein also weighed in...
“What jumps out to me is that in a state where people are talking about freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of education...the government here is trying to legislate against certain types of courses and coursework...”
Weinstein said the proposal is “forcing and constricting the choices that students within the state of Florida are going to have from their state-funded institutions.”
“A private institution can choose to do whatever a private institution would like to do,” he said. “An institution that is supported by state funding needs to supportive of the interests of the state and that is where constitutional amendments and individual rights intersect and sometimes conflict with each other.”

Amazingly, the media cannot seem to find ANYONE who agrees with the governor on this issue.
It’s a waste of money at best.
Love to see him do this - and other states follow
“...announced a proposal to strip funding for all diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs as well as critical race theory...”
All Republican governors should be doing similar things in their own states. Passivity is killing our nation.
Diversity the Anti-White program
RE: to strip funding....
He had better come through. We’re not interested in a strip tease.
Strip funding should be paid for by the customers themselves.
It’s one thing for the state to tell K-12 public schools not to teach about CRT to minors.
It’s quite another thing for the state to tell universities not to teach about CRT to adults.
“It’s quite another thing for the state to tell universities not to teach about CRT to adults.”
If they take State money the State calls the tune.
That’s established law.

Anyone who wants to study CRT in Florida can go to a private college. I’m not funding it with my tax dollars in a public institution.
There’s an easy million bucks per school in savings by making the entire DIE staff & program go away.
“Diversity”, they always come up with such ironic titles.
Yes.
Sounds like desantis is thinking he’s a 3rd world dictator.
People in college can choose to take courses or not after they have done the required core courses. I think he’s overstepping his authority and it’s not good look.
Hell yes!
There are books and videos about CRT for those who are interested. CRT is not a discipline or a career (except for the race industry), it’s merely a theory which can be discussed freely but not on the taxpayer’s dime.
Exactly. This is different from K-12 public school.
I’m not a fan of CRT, as much as I understand it, anyway. But, I might not agree with other subject material, either. We can’t go through college textbooks and dictate to adults what they should learn. Does DeSantis want to review and approve college textbooks now?
I’d prefer that colleges and tuition were not government-subsidized, but they are subsidized - even many Christian colleges accept federal funding. State universities receive state and federal funding. Everyone is forced to fund them, whether or not we agree with the subject matter.
Do both.
