CHICAGO (CBS) -- Plans are moving full speed ahead to open a migrant shelter in what was an abandoned school in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood, and after a community meeting Saturday afternoon, neighbors have a better idea of a timeline for the shelter to open. The city says it is ready to move in migrants as soon as Monday.
But neighbors say they feel the plan was rushed with little community input.
"We were hearing them, but they wasn't hearing us," said one neighbor.
To start, 250 migrants will move into the shelter. It will remain a shelter for two years or less.
But some believe Woodlawn just isn't the right location.
"I'm just disappointed in how the situation was handled all around because they very definitely could've put them in Pilsen or Little Village, and it would've been much more well received," said Justin Cosby.
The city plans on bringing in more resources to keep the migrant population safe, including 24-hour security, contracted security at each door, and Chicago Police Department monitoring of the perimeter.
The operation, the city says, has a cost of $5.5 million from FEMA and $20 million from the state. They are also asking for $50 million more from FEMA in 2023. It adds up to a would-be total of at least $75.5 million.
"You kind of have to be a little bit gullible to belive that they're actually going to do their job and serve the migrant communities when they're not even serving the current community that is here," said Cosby.

At some point you’d think these illegals would send a message back home - Hey we’re being warehoused in vacant buildings, don’t come!
The plan is to kick legacy US citizens out of their homes and give them to deserving “migrants.”
It’s what they did in Great Britain.
So glad I escaped from the land of high taxes, corruption and ridiculous mandates (Illinois).
And miss out on all the free food and healthcare?..probably cash.
The dumbass local politicians are planning on spending big money to “keep the migrants safe.”? What about the people who live there? Who the hell is going to protect them from the “migrants”? Politicians, ALL OF THEM, really suck.
Why not a certain in process of construction library?
Probably still better than where they came from.
Pssst. They ain’t “migrant communities.” They’re illegal invaders.
Yes, it’d be nice if they were all in one convenient place.
Would be terrible if that building burned down once they got there, though.
And they should all vote Democrat at least once, probably more in the 2024 Presidental Election.
“Nice building you have here”...
Re#3. That would essentially violate the 3rd Amendment, the quartering of troops, in this case illegals under federal directives. Wouldn’t matter if it was wartime or not. It would also violate the 4th amendment, right to privacy.
and they’ll have to burn it after the illegals move on
You seem to be laboring under the delusion that we still live under the rule of law.
If we still lived under the rule of law, there would not be hundreds of January 6th “insurrectionists” in solitary confinement for almost three years without bail or trial.
Just unbelievable. Of course they keep coming. Wouldn’t you if you were not sent back?? The money being spent on other countries & on non citizens is criminal. My assumption is that they will leave the shelter & meander out into various communities & states never to be seen again.

Little Village is called Little Mexico. Sounds like segregation to me and if I recall correctly, that’s both racist and illegal.

Told ya.
And you told me...

You’re a prophet!
The other 5.5 million are NOT being warehoused... anyone know the hidden places Biden’s midnight flights are taking them?
