The Memphis Police Department Saturday announced that it has "permanently deactivated" its SCORPION unit, one day after the release of shocking video which showed the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols earlier this month. All five former officers involved in Nichols' arrest, who have since been charged with second-degree murder in his death, were part of that unit.
The decision came after Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis met with members of the unit Saturday "to discuss the path forward for the department and the community in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols," police said in a statement.
Officials came to the conclusion that it was "in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit," the statement read.
SCORPION officers agreed "unreservedly" with the decision, the department added.
The SCORPION unit had been inactive since the Jan. 7 arrest of Nichols, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland had said in a news bulletin Friday.
SCORPION, or Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, included more than two dozen officers tasked with taking on street crime. They wore black hoodies and tactical black vests with "POLICE" emblazoned across the front and back, and drove dark colored Dodge Chargers marked with a SCORPION seal.
They patrolled in groups and at times used low-level traffic stops as a way to find violent criminals, drugs or weapons, according to the department.
"While the heinous actions of a few casts a cloud of dishonor on the title SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted," Saturday's statement read.

Memphis is so bad they are car jacking and robbing in broad daylight. If you come into Memphis you have a 20% chance of getting robbed or shot. BTW the PA in Memphis is a Soros man..
What would clear it up is releasing the dash cam video of what was going on when they first started to pull him over.
These were NOT “bad appples”. They were spawns of satan. No indication of being humans. No milk of human kindness or goodness. What they are and how they behaved is incomprehensible. Their consciences were seared and unless God chooses to change that they will continue on doing evil. Purely rebrobates and incapable of choosing good. They are content with going to hell and choose to go there.

What is going on down there where 5 cops all decided it was okay to just beat someone to death?

Sorry but there is nothing that the person beaten to death could have been doing to justify what those pigs did… nothing.
Holding out hope for justification for their behavior is a fools errand.
If that is what passes for police these days, then no one should trust anyone in law enforcement.
I know they are not a representative sample, but clearly something is very wrong in Memphis…. 5, 5 cops all thought this was okay… not one or even two who lost their temper in the heat of the moment, no 5 all decided we are just going to beat this man to death. Hold his arms and hold him up so I can bully club him… etc etc
This wasn’t and had nothing to do with containment, or neutralizing a threat, this was flat out murder. Those men in blue that night were nothing more than monsters.
There is nothing that can justify their behavior.
Need to know what the hell is going on where they collectively thought this was okay, and that they could do this… something is horribly wrong in Memphis and suspect it involves way more than the PD
There is much more to her than simply being a “black woman”. It is wrong to reduce people to just their gender and race.
She is a black woman who was fired from her previous job in law enforcement for protecting child pornographers. Let’s make sure we give her proper credit for her accomplishments here.
That is not really required.
This unit specialized in taking down hoods in cars.
That is what they were trained to do.
That is how this unit operated.
Somehow this unit got info that the victim was a bad operator.
In other words, the victim got swatted.
The hoods on the street know of this unit and do not fight or resist. This guy was not a hood so he did not know. He panicked and ran. This unit is not used to this happening.
It all makes sense now.
Check the victims background and find out who swatted him and why.
Then take that guy and strap him or her to a gurney.
I think of this when I see pics of so many young male immigrants crossing the border. If a national police force is made up of people who have no love of country or their fellow Americans........cruelty will follow.
Nor does it work out well for Chiefs of Police.
Chief Davis was demoted and subsequently fired from her position in the Atlanta PD when she stopped an investigation into a child molester / child pornographer who happened to be the husband of her fried and coworker.
You would think that being fired for aiding child pornographers would make it hard to get a job as Chief of Police. But I guess the benefits of being black outweigh that in the minds of the diversity / affirmative action crowd.

I think because they giving these people traditional male jobs simply because of gender and race,It is that exact reason why they are doomed to fail. And it’s not about race more than it is about gender. Men should to be leading men, not women leading men.

When that finally happened, they all stop hitting him backed off.

If we locked up criminals there would be no need for the Scorpions. Revolving door “justice” simply produces more criminals who do not respect our laws.
Locking up criminals not only reduces crime, it also reduces the resources required for cops and courts.
this is obvious to most of us, however, we live in a time when stupidity is king.
Apparently the city of Memphis did exactly that. They knew her history when they made her chief.
Detroit had a squad like this back in the ‘70’s. I don’t remember the exact details but they got a reputation for thuggery too and was disbanded.
I think the concept is good, but it’s clearly apparent that a squad like this needs to be staffed by the very best and every move needs oversight preventing things from getting out of control.

I learned that this unit is trained and operates as I stated above. That is why this guy was yanked from his vehicle like he was. They thought he was a bad guy.
The question is, why did they think he was a bad guy?

I’m trying to make sense of what the hell happened.
This unit operates with unmarked cars and they wear no uniforms. Just because they yell “Police” does not mean that they are.
The victim was in fight or flight mode.
The only logical thing here is that the unit got bad information.
Where did this information come from?

Remember the “Summer of Love” in Seattle? Both the dumbass lezbo mayor that made that stupid proclamation and her police chief, a black woman named Carmen Best are gone. They tried at first, to protect Mrs. Best, but she was so incompetent that they had no choice, she had to go.
She and the former mayor and the current fire chief were/are so incompetent, all the lawsuits from the Summer of Love are naming those 3 as the main reason the love fest got out of control. A judge just last week sanctioned those 3 for violating the WA State Public Disclosure laws for deleting thousands of texts and emails between themselves concerning abandoning the police station on Capitol Hill in the CHOP Zone.
After this dies down, I would expect to see the chief say she needs more time with her family…
It is almost unbelievable.
The people who out her in that post either
1) are so enamored with the idea of a black woman leading the police that they were blinded to everything else
or
2) support pedophiles and those that aid them.
And of course they could be both.
