The Memphis Police Department Saturday announced that it has "permanently deactivated" its SCORPION unit, one day after the release of shocking video which showed the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols earlier this month. All five former officers involved in Nichols' arrest, who have since been charged with second-degree murder in his death, were part of that unit.
The decision came after Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis met with members of the unit Saturday "to discuss the path forward for the department and the community in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols," police said in a statement.
Officials came to the conclusion that it was "in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit," the statement read.
SCORPION officers agreed "unreservedly" with the decision, the department added.
The SCORPION unit had been inactive since the Jan. 7 arrest of Nichols, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland had said in a news bulletin Friday.
SCORPION, or Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, included more than two dozen officers tasked with taking on street crime. They wore black hoodies and tactical black vests with "POLICE" emblazoned across the front and back, and drove dark colored Dodge Chargers marked with a SCORPION seal.
They patrolled in groups and at times used low-level traffic stops as a way to find violent criminals, drugs or weapons, according to the department.
"While the heinous actions of a few casts a cloud of dishonor on the title SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted," Saturday's statement read.

After what I’ve seen and read in the last 24 hours, none of them were “useful idiots” they were just “idiots” in the clinical sense.
Three things to see out of this.
1. This ‘unit’ was to restore public trust in local neighborhoods....went in fact...to the opposite agenda. Begs the question, what idiot came up with the idea?
2. All of five of these policemen were chunky (appearing out of shape), but if you watch the video...they seem to have all this excess energy. Drug-driven?
3. How can you restore black trust in Memphis at this point? Hire more unqualified police? Demonize the police even more?
And because the police chief is a black woman , nobody is demanding she resign
after some time...it’ll quietly come back under a different name...

I have not posted my comments on any of the numerous threads regarding the Memphis cops.
That being said, I just picked this story and I see that you made the exact comment I was going to make.
I remember Obama pushing the idea of a National Police Force during his residency in the White House.
I look at the Prosecuting Attorneys who release arrested criminals with no bail.
I look at the few trials of these arrested criminals.
While the Memphis incident may be unrelated, I believe the actions of the Prosecuting Attorneys in the major US cities are all designed to create a ground swell of support for a National Police Force.
Communist dictatorships always go for national police. The “defund the police” mantra from 2020 was never about actually defunding it was about federalizing all local police. The Birchers have been warning against this for years.

Had the police chief been a man, no matter what race, he would have resigned without being asked. He would have known “it’s over” and done the right thing.
