Tyre Nichols: Police unit is disbanded after death

The Memphis Police Department has disbanded the so-called Scorpion special unit, whose officers are accused of murdering Tyre Nichols.

Scorpion stands for "Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods".

The unit is a 50-person unit with the mission of bringing down crime levels in particular areas.

But now it is being abolished after its officers were seen beating Mr Nichols, 29, in the videos from 7 January.

Chief Davis said the Scorpion unit was created to be "more responsive" and "more proactive" to gun violence in the city. But she acknowledged that the officers who brutally beat Tyre Nichols "decided to go off the rails".

The Scorpion programme was touted by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland in a speech a year ago. He said the city used crime data "to determine where the unit will conduct its enforcement activities within the city".

From October 2021 until January 2022, the unit made 566 arrests, he said. They also seized more than $100,000 in cash, 270 vehicles and 253 weapons.

The took "proactive" to the next level.

And now Memphis will have a crime explosion because of an emotion based decision.

I’m reading that 3 of the 5 may have had gang affiliations and this was actually a gang hit and not due to an overenforcement of law.

Probably best to defund this group and break them up.

Why don’t they just hire some street gangsters and pay them off to keep the peace?

Wonder where they went. Like I can't guess.

It would appear that the Scorpion unit was just another street gang, except for the corporate sponsorship.

“Probably best to defund this group and break them up.”

If 3 out of 5 out of 50 have gang affiliation, that’s a serious problem. I think if they have cops who are gang affiliated they need to seek them out and sack them. Just as you would a mafia affiliated cop.

Look at the Beantown FBI office, that agency has been off the rails long before Trump “came down the escalator”. (That was really an effective piece of stage business I must say.)

This Tyre gig sure pulled FJB’s chestnuts out of the classified documents fire. Good timing by Antifa and the Black Looter’s Movement.

No, it was a worthless unit. The hiring was obviously abysmal.

It probably would’ve helped if the Memphis police department actually, you know, are properly trained and vetted in the officers they hired, especially the ones that were promoted to special units.

These days, police departments have to take whatever they can get.

Of course this HAD to happen. They have a fake affirmative action Black female chief of police who was fired from her affirmative Action top cop job in Atlanta.
Now, since she knows nothing about actual police work she shuts down the special anti-crime unit and surrenders the streets to the criminals.
The same thing happen when that fake coward Dermot Shea closed down Anti-Crime units in NYC.
Now there are very few NYPD sectors in very few NYPD precincts that are safe to walk in after dark.

Has anyone checked Nichols for meth or fentanyl. He seemed really hyped up.
