When Students Change Gender Identity, and Parents Don’t Know Educators are facing wrenching new tensions over whether they should tell parents when students socially transition at school. (informative article)
NY Times ^ | January 22, 2023 | Katie J.M. Baker

...The public school that Mrs. Bradshaw’s son attends is one of many throughout the country that allow students to socially transition — change their name, pronouns, or gender expression — without parental consent. Districts have said they want parents to be involved but must follow federal and, in some cases, state guidance meant to protect students from discrimination and violations of their privacy... Educators have also said they feel bound by their own morality to affirm students’ gender identities, especially in cases where students don’t feel safe coming out at home. (emphasis-added)

...

Other teachers believe they have a moral responsibility to withhold such information.

“My job, which is a public service, is to protect kids,” said Olivia Garrison, a history teacher in Bakersfield, Calif., who is nonbinary, who has helped students socially transition at school without their parents’ knowledge. “Sometimes, they need protection from their own parents.”

...

Courts have ruled that under the Fourteenth Amendment, parents get to make medical and mental health decisions for their children, as well as direct their education and upbringing in other ways, unless they are abusive or unfit. But lawyers for schools have countered that parental rights aren’t absolute. Under the Biden Administration, the Department of Education has said that discriminating against students based on gender identity violates federal policy, although its guidance doesn’t specifically address parental rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union has also argued that it’s unconstitutional for public schools to reveal a student’s gender identity to others. Angry parents can put their child in private school or home-school them, said an A.C.L.U. lawyer, Jon Davidson, who is co-counsel for a school district that was sued by parents in Wisconsin.

“Parents don’t have a constitutional right to dictate to schools how they should create an optimal learning environment for students,” he said.

--- "Don't be fooled by the optics. At its heart, this is a fight for the rights of the parent vs the power of the government. I don't give a flying fig about the teachers' morality. In loco parentis has become weaponized. If you needed another reason to homeschool...."

Sincere congratulations on framing the con (flim-flam) correctly. This is a fight between the centralized power of government and the individual rights rooted in parents.

Unsurprisingly, the authoritarians want to rule over the individual., as the individual wants to push back against ever greater "rule."

“We need a national law that any teacher....”

Where in the Constitution is Congress authorized to make such a law?

No, this has to happen on the state and local level. Perhaps school districts could decide not to hire teachers who are confused as to which sex they are or who are obviously otherwise mentally disturbed.

That was common practice within living memory.

The blame is on parents who send their kids into this temple of mind control 8 hrs a day.

I do wonder if this continues and the suicide rates go over the now 46% if those survivor trans will be able to sue the state schools and individual teachers that acted as responsible parents and castrated/amputated their sex organs?

[Minor children have no right to privacy. ...]

How is it private if the teacher announces it to the class? “Class, Johny is now Jenny. And on a completely unrelated note, girls, you may want to start wiping the toilet seat before sitting down.”

“Parents don’t have a constitutional right to dictate to schools how they should create an optimal learning environment for students,” he said.

No, but they do have the constitutional right to vote for candidates who will defund said institutions of evil.

That's right with school choice morally confused institutions will wither and die.

“Sex education in the schools has been, is, and will always continue to be an absolute disaster for the kids....’

............

I must agree. I still remember my junior high football coach trying to explain what a ‘prophylactic’ was and how to use it to a bunch of clueless eighth graders.

This of course was pre-porn, when you had to figure it out yourself.

There are federal laws. Kidnapping is a federal offense.

Let's not forget it's an old strategy by commies and dictators to turn kids against their parents.
Stalin did this, Lenin and Mao too.
That's what this is really about, the subject doesn't matter.

Schools are actively and materially promoting the agenda of the trans crowd.

This is not why schools were created. Like almost everything else in the USA, a normal, function institution has been pre-empted and made to serve the master it was not created for.

And the public is largely ignorant.

Schools, which expel kids who eat poptarts, the remainder of which assumes a shape that some demented individuals call a “gun,” and which call the police when your kid gives another kid an aspirin, teach Fist’*******’, and all the details about same sex sex.

They now promote and give material support to children who imagine that they would be happier as the other sex.

Just another step to the destruction of the family. Moving right along.

TEACH YOUR DISCIPLINE - END OF STORY. If a child is being BEATEN, report it. Outside that, you are not qualified, nor is it your job, to engage in psychiatry. This is nothing more than practicing without a license and DOING HARM to a child. You don’t get to hide behind an argument that you’re STOPPING HARM. You ARE NOT. You DON’T get to decide in secret and without parental involvement.

For a government employee to usurp this responsibility means the government owns your child first, that they have the right, above the parents, to teach ideas, ethics, philosophy, etc., outside of the wishes of the parents. Yet will still hold the parents responsible for the child.

This is a complete violation of parental rights and is COMPLETELY OBVIOUS. It must stop NOW.

...my blood boils at the arrogance of these “teachers” that think they can self appoint this role as they’re “smarter” than all the parents.

Here is my thread on this. The real fight is far deeper than school boards or curriculum. It must be moved back to teachers themselves, which means SERIOUS parental involvement in hiring.

I never dreamed America would fall so far that the only reason for children to go to school is for them to figure out what sex they are with the help and at the hands of evil sexual deviants.

If school personnel are aware that a child is living in an unsafe home environment, aren’t the teachers mandated reporters for that? I would doubt any have ever called DHS to report such.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It’s long past time parents collectively grow a pair and bring resolute peer pressure to bear upon teachers.

Pain with extreme prejudice. Administrators, school board, principals...neighbors/family who support the perverts...the works.
