The Budapest Memorandum was an agreement entered into by the U.S., Britain and Russia, providing Ukraine assurances of security, sovereignty and respect for their borders on the condition of Ukraine’s commitment to being a non-nuclear state.
The Memorandum became very relevant nearly 20 years later during Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea. Russian President Vladimir Putin was widely criticized for breaking the agreement that was foundational to post-Cold War peace in Eastern Europe. Putin justified the invasion as being in response to a revolution against what he called an illegitimate government in Crimea, spinning Russian involvement as a “humanitarian mission” and supporting Russian separatists in “determination of their own country.”

The original talk on this thread was about other countries intervening, meaning us. Another thing, Ukraine knew what Russia was about and had 30 years to prepare to defend itself, yet it seems they did very little.

No, it’s not. There is an old maxim in analyses: Reduce the problem to its most fundamental and basic and immediate (the micro), as that is often a good way to understand the dynamics of the problem (the macro) and how it developed.

Does it have to be? I mean, in 1939 and 1940 Britain was not our neighbor, yet we armed it and supplied it in its war with Germany. China was not our neighbor in the 1930s, yet we sent it supplies, and even made it possible for American “volunteers” to fly American-made and supplied aircraft against the Japanese.

We had an interest in not seeing Germany conquer Britain, and we had an interest in helping China in its fight against Japan. The situation today vis-a-vis Ukraine is not all that dissimilar.

A lot of countries are “intervening,” on both sides of the conflict (more on behalf of Ukraine, though).

Yes, Ukraine had and has a very bloody memory of Russia; and knew full well what Russia was about. That’s why it sought closer relations with the West, and it was well on its way in that regard until Yanukovych — a Putin lackey — reneged on his initial support of that direction (which he had campaigned on, in order to get elected; as a majority of the Ukranian people WANTED closer relations with the West), and flipped to a pro-Moscow approach.
Think about it: Pretty much All the former Russian or Soviet (really, they are synonymous) republics or satellites in Eastern Europe — after gaining independence — clamored to join NATO, precisely BECAUSE they knew what Russia was all about, and they wanted no part of it again.
It takes time and capital and hard work to develop a new country. 30 years is not an outlier.

It doesn’t have to be an alliance. Countries enter into agreements all the time that are not alliances. The US does not need congress to pass or ratify everything. In our system of government, we have three co-equal branches: The Executive (President, cabinet, executive agencies), the Legislative (Congress and its offices), and the Judicial (the Courts). Our Constitution does not require that the branches all sign off on every piece of government business; and each branch has some powers that are unique to it and it alone.
Here we go again. It is their problem, not ours. We have no interests there. The comparison with the Axis and Hitler is overused and a stretch. We have no obligation to a country negligent in providing for its own defense. 30 years is plenty of time to build a strong military. “It is time to act for Ukraine” is a call for expanding the war as we have donated huge amounts of supplies and money.
Well, we see this differently. But we’ll both likely see it come to its denouement.
Time to act should mean sue for peace and surrender.
