I first encountered unabashed pride in being American when I came to the United States in 1951. I sailed across the Atlantic alone. Perhaps someone along the way told me tht I was going to the United States; however, as a seven or eight-year-old I knew nothing about the nation that had granted me refuge.
Upon disembarking in New York what stood out was not the awe-inspiring and intimidating skyscrapers seemingly reaching to the heavens, or for the first time in my life seeing a city not lying in ruins from the ravages of war, but that there was a palpable atmosphere of confidence, optimism, self-reliance and above all pride among the people in this new and mystifying country.
I soon learned that this mindset permeated the entirety of this vast nation and had since its founding, thus, enabling it to evolve into the most successful nation-state in the annals of mankind. While no nation can ever create an ideal society, due to certain immutable characteristics of the human race, no country has come closer to doing so. It is the only nation in history committed to right societal wrongs, to live by the underlying tenets of Judeo-Christianity and govern itself by means of a written Constitution that reflects those values.
As recently as 2004, 91% of Americans were extremely or very proud to be American and the United States ranked first in the world in national pride. However, in less than twenty years there has been a stunning reversal that portends a dire future for the United States as a precipitous erosion in national pride has undermined societal confidence, self-reliance, optimism, and cohesion.

Wonder what number was from 2008-2012?
What we are seeing play out is the reality of demographic change in America as the younger mal-educated generations account for over half of the populace and are increasingly becoming culturally and politically influential. Within these generations an overwhelming majority have been indoctrinated by socialist/Marxist ideologues to believe that a capitalist United States as founded is irredeemable and must be transformed.
Over the past sixty years, as the oblivious governing generations slept and reveled in America’s prosperity, the American Marxists relentlessly infiltrated the legacy media, the entertainment complex, and the education establishment. Their ultimate objective was to indoctrinate the younger generations into mindless foot soldiers that would foment future societal turmoil -- the primary tactic for achieving permanent political power.
Public schools have succeeded in their indoctrination.
They are more than welcome to leave.
Yeah...they should go...to Zimbabwe, or somewhere.
Well the way things have been going lately, I haven’t been all that proud of being an American myself. Probably because the American people are no longer the ones in control of this country, we’ve undergone an elitist coup when the election was stolen from Trump.
The fruits of multiculturalism.
They should be invited to move to a country where they can experience a socialist or Muslim third-world lifestyle and then be re-polled.
It does make you wonder, what will America look like 20 years from now , 30 years from now , 50 years from now.
Will America be a full blown socialist country in the future?
Will all this LGBT business be carried to further and further extremes?
Will our cities be structured differently, in terms of where we all live ,and the transportation we all use? Will owning private vehicles be common? With the internal combustion engine set to be outlawed in many states, how many people will have electric cars, and will our electric grid be able to recharge hundreds of millions of electric cars as we are compelled to go in that direction?
Just a few thoughts of apprehension about what the future holds
Forty years of Howard Zinn will do that to you!
73 % are slackers losers and stoners that never did anything in their life of worth and pampered their life is a cell phone a computer drugs and sex and theft for the above.
Frisco LA NY Chicago are infested with the likes of them dead end street is their life.
Apparently communist disinformation tactics work on certain generations.
what’s more detrimental is that 27% (at least) of the younger generation are lazy and ignorant....
As far as why they are not proud of this country, I’m sure many would talk about how America is racist , sexist, homophobic Etc, as per Hillary’s screed on the subject.
After all , with their reasoning ability, who could be proud of a country that is racist and sexist and homophobic? Who can be proud of a country which has not done enough , in their opinion to reduce our carbon footprint?
The Enlightenment emphasizing individual human liberties synthesized into property as defined most immediately by John Locke, William Blackstone, Montesquieu, and James Madison. Here property was first sourced internally in personal self-protection, opinion, religion, communications, use of abilities to labor physically and mentally, and in conscience. Only through the exercise of those liberties could one acquire the traditional manifestations of property. That became the basis of our Constitution.
Since the emergence of independent colonies and for all time Americans would be defined as sovereign individuals finding their identity in exercising pre-existing intangible liberties within bounds of voluntary self-restraint and accompanied by the hazards and uncertainties of personal freedoms. Their ethnicity, gender, class, and race would always be secondary expressions of humanity.
Quang Nguyen who escaped from Vietnam and founded Caddis Branding Agency said, “In 1982, I stood with a thousand new immigrants, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and listening to the National Anthem for the first time as an American. To this day, I can't remember anything sweeter and more patriotic than that moment in my life…..You see, America is not just a place on the map, it isn't just a physical location. It is an ideal, a concept. And if you are an American, you must understand the concept, you must accept this concept, and most importantly, you have to fight and defend this concept. This is about Freedom and not free stuff. And that is why I am standing up here.”
How much of that is natural hubris of youth? That they know they can do better.
I certainly thought that way. Life us a great teacher.
I hope many of those who answered negatively are just young and think they know everything
Didn’t we all?
What did you expect, public schools have been teaching how bad the USA and its Constitution for over 50 years.
Capitalism bad; socialism good.
I’d suggest they move to China, Iran, Venezuela or North Korea. Look, America isn’t perfect, but we are light years better than those nations.
