Yohann Michel, a research analyst for defense and military affairs at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said such tanks could allow Ukraine to go onto the offensive in the 11-month-old conflict that has been stalemated for months following two key Ukrainian counteroffensives that recaptured areas occupied by Russian forces for months in the northeast and south.
“In this type of conflict, it's just not possible to carry out large-scale offensives without the full variety of armored combat equipment and armored vehicles, and tanks are a part of that," he said. In addition to Main Battle Tanks, or MBTs, like the Leopard 2, others include infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers.
Western deliveries of Leopard 2s could help equip Ukraine with needed high-caliber munitions to replace its own dwindling Soviet-era stockpiles, opening a new avenue for supplies of Western firepower to get to Ukraine, he said.
Raths noted that the Leopard 2 and similar Western tanks are more agile than T-models used by Russia, which can't reverse at speed, for example.
“Imagine a boxer who cannot move freely in the ring, but only in one direction,” he said. “The other boxer, who can move in all directions, has a big advantage and that it is the case with the Leopards.”
Still, even Western MBTs are vulnerable to aerial attacks, or anti-tank infantry while in forests and urban areas, highlighting the importance of anti-aircraft and reconnaissance support, said Raths.
With similar numbers of tanks on both sides, Leopards 2 and similar tanks could give Ukraine the upper hand, especially given the poor tactical performance of Russian troops during the war, he said.
“The Ukrainians shine through creative, dynamic and often very clean warfare,” Raths said. “So it could well be that if Ukraine's operational offensive were to begin, the Russians would have real problems countering it.”

Plus side is that it will be a good field test to see if the German tanks are any more effective than Russian tanks against modern anti-tank weapons.

Currently Germany has around 800 tanks in its
enventory of which 400 are in storage.
No way even a single battalion of tanks could be
sent from Germany;They do not have that many.
Probably the story should read “company” instead
of battalion. Even fox news sometimes runs with
stories they do not verify. This story is being ran everywhere!
Still Germany is capable of sending at least
300 Leopard tanks if not more. Perhaps that 400 they have
in storage.
This is an escalation of this war for sure and there
are always consequences. Not saying we shouldn’t help but
it will lead to trouble.
Do not underestimate the Russian People. When pushed up against the wall they will unleash hell on their enemies. Just wait until this war starts to spread to other areas of the world. Keep a close eye on U.S. efforts to institute a draft and mobilize our society behind a world war. That will be met with indifference and likely violent opposition. Trying to draft this woke generation will be impossible and the non-woke have been completely alienated by the government. The people that are at war with Russia are the same people that are at war with America. It’s going to be a real cluster.

A sequel to “The Guns of August.” It should be called “The Tanks of January.” No happy endings in sight.
In the first gulf war, our F111 pilots were underutilized. The air bosses started using them for tank plinking. The F111’s would stay up high and get a visual or radar lock on the Iraqi tanks on the ground. Your bomb carrying aircraft, usually an f16 would lob a bomb from about 20 kilometers away. As the bomb went into descent, the F111 would paint the tank with a laser from it’s lantirn pod. Plink, a 250lb or 500lb hit on the top of a tank. That’s what happens to tanks without air superiority. The russians can hang back from the front lines and designate the tanks. probably even designate from the ground.
