Deliveries would be part of deal to enable provision of German-built Leopards
The Biden administration is leaning toward sending a significant number of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine and an announcement of the deliveries could come this week, U.S. officials said.
The announcement would be part of a broader diplomatic understanding with Germany in which Berlin would agree to send a smaller number of its own Leopard 2 tanks and would also approve the delivery of more of the German-made tanks by Poland and other nations. It would settle a trans-Atlantic disagreement over the tanks that had threatened to open fissures as the war drags into the end of its first year.

Psalm 73: [M1 Abrams are unlike any other main battle tank in the world - maintenance and logistics would be a bear for the Ukes.
Unless American maintenance and logistics personnel are provided.... ]
A tanker who spent time in Kuwait within the confines of an M1 during Desert Storm talks maintenance:
here is the simple truth, we are here to help ukr, not say things that may hurt them.
@mentions
many people in the political world do not want to give ukr tanks for political reasons.. fine, if thats the case please say it out loud. thats fine i can respect that. i dont agree but who am i? no one.
@mentions
some people dont want to give ukr tanks due to cost... ok 100 tanks + parts + training + support + ammo is about 2.5 billion. got it that can buy a lot of himars rockets.. if thats the issue than fine at least say that.
@mentions
BUT most are saying things that are totally untrue, and a simple google search or talking to people in the military that know what they are talking about would fix in 10 min.
@mentions
fuel, the M1 can run on ANYTHING from gas to oil, the best fuels are JP4,5, 8, and diesel. the new versions of the tanks have a APU installed to run the tank systems and keep the batteries charged. this makes the M1 more fuel efficient than the leo2 overall
@mentions
thats right THE M1 WITH THE APU IS MORE FUEL EFFICIENT THAN THE LEO2.
@mentions
weight. the current M1A2 is 71 tons, the leo A6 is 68.9 tons... 2 tons different. if a bridge can take a leo it can take a M1. and ukr has bought a bunch of french premade 100 ton bridges that are being installed all over ukr right now.
@mentions
but maintenance??? the M1 motor has 1 moving part.... the leo2 has over 200 in its motor and the motor lasts about 1/2 the time of the M1s.
it takes less time to change a M1 motor than a leo 2.
@mentions
also as we have seen with the (GER) PZH2000 and the (US) M109 the US 109 is fixed in the field for everything. the PZH2000 has to be sent out of country due to it being german and to complex to be fixed in ukr (due to its turret having to be removed for service)
@mentions
parts.. the leo 2 parts CAN ONLY BE MADE IN GERMANY (due to contracting). so the stockpiles of parts are in germany. thats why people are reluctant to send tanks to ukr. germany will sit on the needed parts and after a week or 2 the tanks wont work any more.
@mentions
major parts where houses for M1, permisance, honenfelds ger, poland, Egypt, saudi, aust, etc..
ANY part needed is just a DHL/C17 flight to poland, a short MI-17 hop to the front in ukraine.. anything (part) short of a motor is doable in just 2-3 hrs.
@mentions
training and upkeep.. please dont bring up training. the 1st tank brigade with old T64s kept the best of the russian army from kyiv for 2 months. probably the most experienced crews in the world right now.
@mentions
upkeep and maintenance... ukr is one of the FEW countries in the world that has made there own modern tanks. upkeep is NOT a issue.
the M1 is one of the most easiest tanks in the world to keep running with a motivated crew. its proven that ukr troops are motivated.
@mentions
the motor, is a jet engine made for fighter aircraft...
in europe the countries that can make jet aircraft.. UK, GER, IT, SW... and UKR... ukr has plenty of exp with jet engines... but most would be fixed by GD civilian tecs in poland
@mentions
training, a again... if Iraqi, Saudi, Egypt troops can use the M1... my god dont make me say it.... in the hands of ukr troops (again probably some of the best in the world right now) will have no issues. so please no.
@mentions
ammo....
no shortage, over 1 million rounds for the 120mm are in europe, and thank god most are not swiss. ammo is NOT a problem.
@mentions
so in closing please if anyone can retweet this to
@MarkHertling i would love to have a talk with him on why he still thinks why the UKR forces should not get the M1.
@mentions
again i got it politics, cost, etc... but be up front about it.. there is NO practical reason why the M1 should not go to UKR. and if you dont know, thats ok to, thats what NCOs are here for, to help officers figure things out. i am willing to help. ]
Whatever it takes to cover up Democrat crimes in Ukraine.
“RuZZia is being demilitarized. RuZZia is its weakest since the fall of the USSR. RuZZia can’t even conquer Ukraine. How could they attack anyone else? Nonsense.”
Really. Perhaps you’re correct regarding large scale military ground operations and forward infantry capabilities.
Russia can still turn virtually any city they choose into a glass parking lot.
“Bloomberg writes that tomorrow Germany will give Poland permission to re-export its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.”

The Iraqi Republican Guard was supposedly competent in tank warfare in the first Gulf War using Russian T-72 tanks and got destroyed by American M1 tanks I would roughly equate it to very competent NASCAR driver being thrown into an F1 car, it’s going to take time to get up to speed
Because they take their orders from the U.S.?
The Ruskies can now knock out $6,000,000 US tanks like they have done over the last year in Ukraine. How many tanks have they already lost? Just send more. It'll be okay. We won't lose them again. Promise!
Let's turn $120 billion tossed away on the Ukes to $200 billion while we are about to default on our government obligations and stop paying old people SSI and Medicare bills.
Smart. Real smart.!
We have been selling tanks to Poland for a while and the M1A2 SEP v3 Main Battle Tanks and related equipment go for an estimated cost of $6.21 million apiece.
Try finding out if, and how, the Ukraine intends to pay for the weapons we have sent them already. You will not get a straight answer.

There is a stupid idea.
in an act of lunacy, the Marine Corps passed all their tanks to the Army a few years ago along with other heavy weapons. Send those over to the Ukes rather than letting them rust.
Drones? Aren't Iran and China making/ supplying drones to ZZ? The Ukes seemed to have had success knocking out ZZ armour with drones (supplied from where?). Do our Abrams have anti-drone capability, or at least anti-drone defense strategy? I get the impression that armour in the field today is much like the battleships of WWII.

German licensing rights over the Leopard require their approval before a customer transfers them to another user ( ie, Poland must get German approval to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine)
Germany is being squeezed to stick with the NATO ( actually US) agenda of all for one, one for all. Independent policy decisions are dangerous to control of and by the collective. If Germany goes rogue, NATO loses its center. Why, we even destroyed Germany’s external Nordstream pipeline to ensure they couldn’t maintain an energy relationship with Russia.
Germany, for it’s part, is saying to the US. WWG1WGA ….if you want to escalate in Ukraine by sending MBT’s…US, you go first. Send in Abrams, if you expect us to send Leopards. Put Yankee skin in the game.
Every military analyst sees this as politicized grandstanding by the West, knowing the platforms are vulnerable to breakdown and battle destruction, and that the Ukes simply cannot build a 3d Army ( having already lost the equivalent of 2 armies)…maintain all the diverse and incompatible weapon and support systems, and operate field it in less than 6 months, at best.
So here we are.
If ISIS can take out an Abrams…so can the Russian army.
The US has made clear that it will not deliver the Abrams M-1 tank to Ukraine. This is the US main battle tank that is vital to NATO defense. Reluctance to send them to Ukraine could also represent a Pentagon view that the M-1s might not fare well on the modern battlefield against Russian forces because they control most of Ukraine’s airspace, meaning that tanks can be destroyed by air attack.
Psychologically, the loss of US tanks to Russian weapons would be a negative message about America’s ability to uphold security in Europe. (It certainly would unnerve the Baltic States and Germany.
