Russia rolls out more threats against the West - analysis
The Jerusalem Post ^ | January 22, 2023 | SETH J. FRANTZMAN

Russia’s “nuclear war” rhetoric appears every few months, on a kind of cycle. Whenever the West and Ukraine appear to be winning and Ukraine is being strengthened, then Russia will roll out this talk. It will also mobilize other voices to make it seem that Ukraine isn’t interested in “peace” and that Ukraine is “escalating.” This terminology is misplaced because it is Russia that escalated and invaded Ukraine.

However, Moscow wants to shift focus to what the West is doing...

“Think about it, if Russians based in Cuba launched missiles at Washington DC, would you not also want to retaliate?”

What kind of analogy is that? For it to make any sense, someone other than Ukrainians would have to be based in Ukraine, and that “some other” would have to launch missiles at Moscow.

There is presently no “some other” in Ukraine with missiles capable of hitting Moscow.

If that ever comes to pass, then let’s talk about it at that time.

All these “what ifs” are nothing but exercises in navel gazing.

“...the US backed former state of Ukraine.”

FORMER state of Ukraine? Kind of getting ahead of yourself, don’t you think?

The Western media is now running plenty of TRUTHFUL stories about how Ukraine is now doing, but I guess they haven’t made it yet to CNN.

I get my info from European sources, including on occasion both Ukrainian and Russian telegram channels. The US media are effectively worthless.

The fact is that Russia has gained at most a few kilometers at the cost of thousands of dead, far less than they gained from last summer's offensives. Meanwhile the Ukrainians are inching their way towards Kreminna on the far right of the Russian flank. Looks kinda like a stalemate to me.

You guys have been predicting Russian victory since the war started. It seems doubtful reality will reach you anytime soon.

It’s kind of ironic that you put up a story about the Russians making nuclear threats and then along come a bunch of Russians to make nuclear threats.

It makes me want to put up a story about Russians giving me lots of money!

The thing is, you probably WOULD want to retaliate if some country did us that favor.

If your sources are good, you’d know just how valuable this ground is. Just taking Soledar has sped things up for Russia significantly.

Ahead of you but that isn’t difficult. The former state of Ukraine lost it’s sovereignty in 2014.

“The former state of Ukraine lost it’s sovereignty in 2014.”

It did? Does the rest of the world know that?

So, I assume it has been absorbed into some other country. What country now holds sovereignty over the country formerly known as Ukraine?

Is it Poland? I mean, Poland is right next door. Maybe Moldova. Or, maybe it was Eritrea? Burkino Faso?

“Actually, anything that brings the end of the war closer makes me happy.”

Then, you’d be full of glee if Russia announced tomorrow it was withdrawing all its forces from Ukraine, per the recognized national boundaries in 2013, disclaiming any control or sovereignty over Ukraine or any part of Ukraine, per those boundaries, and calling it a day. Yes or no?

Yep, I don’t like nuclear wars hanging over my head. As to the reality of the above...obviously not happening.

“Yep, I don’t like nuclear wars hanging over my head.”

I don’t think anyone does.

But the chance of any nuclear war rest pretty much with Russia (I mean, Russia has been threatening pretty much that for months). So, if you have a fear of nuclear war — and what sane person wouldn’t? — you should take that up with Russia.

The people filled with ABJECT HATRED are the Neocons, and their hatred directed at Russia and their hatred began before Trump was even president, and they control nukes, lots of them. That is no less dangerous than Hitler having nukes as he was also seething with hatred. On the other hand, by all rules of warfare, Russia has EVERY RIGHT to engage NATO countries...except that they show restraint.

“The people filled with ABJECT HATRED are the Neocons, and their hatred directed at Russia and their hatred began before Trump was even president, and they control nukes, lots of them.”

These “Neocons,” as you call them, have apparently been in control of the US government since GHWB (that would be Bush I). Yet, oddly, they never nuked Russia. And what better time to do it then in the 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed and disintegrated? Yet, strangely, they never did. Why is that? I mean, if the US were planning to nuke Russia, what better time than that?

“That is no less dangerous than Hitler having nukes as he was also seething with hatred.”

You are projecting onto others your clearly exhibited “seething hatred” of those you call “Neocons,” obviously a talking point.

“On the other hand, by all rules of warfare, Russia has EVERY RIGHT to engage NATO countries...except that they show restraint.”

Well, Russia could try and justify any such engagement, but it would be about as credible as the ever-changing reasons it gave for invading Ukraine. So, why doesn’t it? I’ll tell you why: Because bullies do not attack someone who can not only fight back but can fight back so forcefully that the bully is destroyed. Bullies bluff and bluster, and only pick a fight with someone they think they can dominate. But when the intended victim fights back, that bully shrieks and wails and cries “FOUL!” Why do you think all those former Soviet satellite countries rushed to join NATO once they became independent? Because they knew Russia was a bully, and they knew that NATO would stand up to that bully.

"They never actually justified the use of nuclear weapons themselves but they have enough of them to turn a hundred cities to salt, all at once, all across the globe."

Russia would not be allowed to hit a hundred cities with nukes. If Russia launched nukes, though, all Russian nuclear facilities and other military facilities would be shot out of existence, and Russia would no longer be a nuclear threat. The world would celebrate and live in relative peace.

Russia would only be enlarging its bad public affairs reputation by attempting to launch nukes. Nukes don't turn cities to salt.

Russia has the world’s largest nuke stockpile.

They are also slowly becoming truly independant. We are creating a nightmare.

Back off US.
