So I don’t understand...why don’t they just cut the lines that feed the gas to the city, I mean if gas is bad, it’s bad for everyone and all things..screw it if it gets cold and you can’t heat the house, too bad.

I was watching ‘Ask This Old House’ last night and they comparing the difference between induction ranges and gas ranges.
Of course, being a PBS TV program they were touting how fabulous induction was and how bad gas ranges were.

Because they'd rather burn the gas in a powerplant to make electricity (a 40% loss in efficiency at best) and transmit it over wires (another 10% loss). So that way, they can burn twice as much gas to do the same job.

One of the few things we missed moving from the suburbs to the country, was the dirt cheap natural gas that powered everything in our house, even when you lost power, you could still take a hot shower, or play in the snow and take a hot bath. Lost power many times but not gas or water.
