Well, “AR” could stand for “Arsehole Remover” ... but actually stands for “Armalite,” the original manufacturer of the firearm.

Oh, and no AR is a “machine gun.” AR pattern rifles are all semi-auto (or, in the case of a very few custom versions, bolt action). The M series (M-16 and M-4) are the ones that are full auto from the beginning. Yes, I am aware that an AR can be converted into a full auto, but no one can buy them like that at a gun shop.
