Justifying Attack on Social Security, House Republican Claims People ‘Want to Work Longer’
Alaska Native News ^ | Jan 16 2023 | Jake Johnson

Republican Rep. Rick Allen of Georgia suggested last week that he would support raising the Social Security retirement age—a policy change that would slash benefits across the board—because people have approached him and said they “actually want to work longer.”

Confronted by an advocate in the Capitol Building and asked how the GOP plans to cut Social Security, the congressman responded, “We’re not going to cut Social Security.”

But seconds later, Allen contradicted himself by expressing support for raising the retirement age, saying the move would “solve every one of these problems”—not specifying what the “problems” are from his perspective.

Relax. Even if legislation was passed and signed into law, the new retirement age minimum would not apply to those nearing the current minimum age. It would apply to those born in, say, 1968 or born later. Or 1970...

He wants to give the democrats fodder to use on Republicans incessantly for the next election. Probably was paid off.

“ (A) It has to be done, ”

Why, so they can have more money to fund the war in Ukraine and start other wars. And continue to fund mass immigration? ? I don’t see Rep Allen proposing ANY cuts in military or in social services for low skilled immigrants

I’ll likely retire at 66. That gives me a year and a half to find something to do. Luckily I have over 9 weeks of vacation saved up and earn a little over 2 days a month.

Social security is no where near enough to live on

`````````````````````````````````````
Nor was it ever meant to be.
I think everyone knows now that Social Security is in trouble. They need to come up with creative ways to “shrink the malignant tumor”. The Democrats just wanted the Republicans to bring it up first so they could beat them with the issue before addressing it
Social Security is a problem that has to be fixed, but not nearly the problem immigration is. Whatever problem Social Security is, it won’t destroy the nation.
I was so lucky to have a profession that I truly loved. My hobby is in a complimentary field...
You definitely need something to do.
I had my hobby and a nice garden for 3 years...but too weak now. What is...is.
I’m not 60 yet but I don’t want to keep working till I’m 67. Looking at retiring at 60. Which should be the age of retirement!
People like you hate Social Security and want it to go away by any means necessary.
What you are really doing is creating a permanent democrat party majority.
The democrats are so extreme that they should be a permanent minority party.
But stupidity like this keeps them in the game.
This guys a lying sack of crap.
I am sure there are some minority of folks who do wish to keep working, but Social Security doesn’t prevent people from working longer, so its a non starter argument.
This guys a doofus...
I don’t hate Social Security.
There is no emotion involved here—just “cold equations”.
It is not going away—and it will not be “fixed”.
It is a poison pill.
Thank you for referencing that article 6thavenue. Please note that the following critique is directed at Rep. Rick Allen and not at you.
"Justifying Attack on Social Security, House Republican Claims People ‘Want to Work Longer’"
FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument
Rep. Allen seems to be clueless (blatantly ignores?) that Social Security (SS) is based on stolen state powers using FDR era politically correct interpretation of General Welfare Clause (1.8.1) as an excuse imo.
In fact, the congressional record shows that Rep. John Bingham, a constitutional lawmaker, had clarified that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention had left the care of the people to the states, not the federal government.
”Simply this, that the care of the property, the liberty, and the life of the citizen, under the solemn sanction of an oath imposed by your Constitution, is in the States and not in the federal government [emphases added]. I have sought to effect no change in that respect in the Constitution of the country.” —John Bingham, Congressional. Globe. 1866, page 1292 (see top half of third column)
Justice Louis Brandeis later reflected on Bingham's words when he introduced his "laboratories of democracy" metaphor to emphasize the unique, 10th Amendment power of the states to serve the needs of the people, ultimately depending on what the citizens of a given state want.
"[...] a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country." —Justice Louis Brandeis, Laboratories of Democracy.
The remedy for unconstitutional federal SS is to return what's left of “federal” SS funding back to the states so that each state can start its own SS program, again, depending on what healthcare and retirement state government services, as examples, that the citizens of a given state are willing to pay their state for.
The bottom line is that patriots need to tell their respective federal lawmakers that they're going to get primaried in 2024 if they haven't supported legislation requiring the corrupt feds to surrender SS funds back to the states.
All that money they sent to the Ukraine could have gone a long way towards that funding SS. Congress appropriating funds for war, sending military weapons for war, but not doing the constitutional thing and declaring a war
“ I think everyone knows now that Social Security is in trouble.”
Because we spend trillions on foreign wars and on social services for low income immigrants. That’s why there’s not enough money for Social Security. It’s because our government puts American citizens last.
Of course it’s going to collapse. But it’s interesting, DOD I’d never going to collapse, Ukraine is never going to collapse, free money for illegal aliens will never collapse. Foreign aid is never going to collapse. A 500 billion nsa data storage center is never going to collapse.
Only SS is going to collapse. Funny how that works.
If the GOP raises the retirement age they are dead. BAD IDEA. They need to stop this kind of wreckless talk.
I’m amazed how little time it took Republicans, once they got into power, to shoot themselves in the foot and make fools of themselves once again.
“Work longer”? (expletive hidden) There are few jobs for the elderly. They find out your age and don’t ever get back to you.
Accomodations are made for people who think they’re the other sex, and for people who are a minority religion, but not for the person who has reached the magic age of “retirement.”
