The reason the Soviets ultimately were driven out of Afghanistan was ... Stingers. American-supplied, shoulder-fired, anti-aircraft missiles.
The Russian's combined arms aspect broke down when the Muj got Stingers because the close air support aircraft wouldn't fly into known or suspected MANPADS (and anywhere there wasn't a "known" threat still was suspect).
Without CAS, the armor wouldn't leave the motor pool. Without armor support, the infantry wouldn't leave the barracks.
Russians apparently are slow to catch on because the reason their armor units have suffered so many devastating, humiliating, high-profile losses in the Ukraine ... was lack of combined arms support.
