What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.

“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.

For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.

“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.

Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

It’s kinda nice to not see Al Gorey’s face on the page!

The shower is done, but because of circumstances, it took longer than it should have. It’s what I get for taking the phone into the bathroom. FS is safely on his way and will be staying in Kentucky tonight. Somewhere.

FD says the entire state of CO is shut down because of the snowstorm, so Rob’t won’t be going to work tonight.

I still want to walk but it will be hard to keep from doing so even in the cold rain.

It was a balmy 30 fs when we went for our walk this morning.

It was a brisk 7° when Tyson-who-is-not-allowed-on-the-furniture was "invited" to go outside and doodoo his business this morning.

He didn't dally. He is now on my bed, energetically licking the pillow.

It’s good to have weather to encourage the locals to finish their important business.

This started back in the 70’s when fashion adopted the unisex style of clothing. Actually it started by dressing every one down. Jeans and T shirts.

I saw this trend first hand as I went through school in the 1970s. In the earlier grades, even public schools required boys to wear shirts and neckties. Only dresses and skirts for the girls. My first and second grade class pictures bear that out. In third grade, around 1971 for me, more casual clothes were allowed but still no jeans or T-shirts allowed until the mid 1970s.

By 1977, all the boys started looking like David Bowie, Jim Morrison and other rock stars. I definitely had the Andy Gibb thing going for a while, with the blow dried feminine hair down to my shoulders. My father was so embarrassed he wouldn't even let me ride in his car with him. When I got my driver's license in 1979, I had to get a haircut to borrow his car. True story.

But we never obsessed on it like the kids of today. We didn't care about pronouns, different genders and all that other crap. We just dressed how we wanted to and that was that.

Using any word that has already been chosen as the word of the day (in my opinion) cuts your chances of getting it in one or two guesses. Or three, in my case.

Google (or whatever search engine you prefer) “best starting words for Wordle” and pick one. There is also a list of words that have been used, and I have printed that and use it so that I don’t put in a word that has already been used.

I just like to increase my chances because some days, I need all the help I can get. ;o]

Social media has taken care of the obsession and all the influencers.

I graduated in ‘68. That was the first year we were allowed to wear polyester pant suits. My father wouldn’t let my date, who has now been my husband 54 years, to come beyond the steps to the house because of his ‘long’ hair. It was more of a Beatles’ style.

That outfit is a good solution: shoulder pads and feathers, with a nut-cup

It’s not raining here. I think I have a cold. I took a nap, and may nose isn’t running right now, but I still feel sort of sideways.

Vlad will take Kathleen to her class at church, and I will get their supper on the table at 5:15. Vlad’s a good driving brother. He knows being helpful is good for his own lifestyle!

Here, it’s mostly rainy. I’d rather have sun. Then I don’t feel so moldy.

Mona took me but it was after the pharmacy had sent me a text saying the pills I wanted today can’t be picked up until tomorrow.

So if the sun is shining tomorrow, I’ll walk down to Kroger. I DID get quarters for laundry, though!

Then Mona stayed for over two hours. Hmmm... The rain POURED for most of that time. This place is feeling damp.

We succeeded in getting Shannon’s pills and all the things I wanted at Walmart except tissues, which I forgot.

I’m going to cook some chicken if the oven will ever get to 375.
