I would suggest filing for divorce as a good first step, followed by a order of protection, which will not do any good when he tries to kill you but does mean that you will be hassled less by the cops after you take the final step, which would be you defend yourself with lethal force.

The victim actually has to prove the level of threat in a series of expensive court proceedings in order to keep herself and the kids safe.
