Bryan Kohberger appeared in court Thursday morning for a status conference, and his next court date, a preliminary hearing, was set for June 26.

The preliminary hearing, when both sides will have the chance to provide evidence and call witnesses to the stand, will last about five days and decide whether there is reasonable cause.

In court, Kohberger, 28, waived his right to a speedy probable cause hearing within 14 days.

A public defender, Anne Taylor, said that they needed time to review the details for the case.

The Washington State University criminology student is being charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary.

Victims Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were found stabbed to death in a townhouse in Moscow, Idaho, Nov. 13.

Kohberger is being held without bond at Latah County Jail after being arrested Dec. 30 in Albrightsville, Pa. Kohberger was extradited to Idaho Jan. 4.

Local law enforcement reviewed tapes of the neighborhood around the victims’ home after the murders, discovering that a white Hyundai Elantra circulated around the home of the victims at least three times on the day of the murders.

Police found a white Elantra was registered to Kohberger. One of the surviving roommates also told authorities Kohberger matched the description of the man she saw in their home that night.

Phone records placed Kohberger in Moscow at 4:48 a.m.

The murders are believed to have occurred around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13, according to authorities.

Authorities also found a knife sheath with DNA on it at the crime scene, and after they obtained DNA from the garbage outside Kohberger’s home, authorities concluded that the DNA was the father of the person whose DNA had been left on the knife sheath.

So much for speedy trials.

In a just society he'd have an appointment with the hangman before month's end.

are the courts that backlogged that it takes five months just to have a preliminary hearing?

Defense requested the delay. In the OP.

Wow. Some commenters apparently cannot read. Quoting the article:

That buys our boy six months in Latah County Jail instead of Death Row in the maximum security facility south of Boise. From the sound of things that’s about all it buys him.

It will take 5 days of testimony to determine reasonable cause? Gimme a break. It’s a high profile case and the prosecutors, defense and the judge will all be grandstanding, hoping for their 15 minutes of fame.

So he’s relying on a public pretender to represent him? He might as well resign himself to a life in prison. I would have thought some big guns would have taken him on pro bono.

Will he be held in (a very secure) jail until then?

I expect to see him get off. His parents, or at least his father, who drove him back to PA from WA, obviously know that he did it but they appear to have gotten top attack dog attorneys ($$$) and for some reason sometimes it seems to me that the press is almost sympathetic to him.

Creepy.

They probably don’t want to waste their time because of the DNA.

While not a child molester I don’t think this guy would fare very well in the general pop at the State Pen.

I think not too many lawyers are going to be chomping at the bit to take a case they are just about guaranteed to lose.
