Extreme weather caused $165 billion in US damage in 2022: officials

Washington (AFP) – Major hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, drought and a fierce winter storm caused more than $165 billion in damage in the United States last year with climate change "supercharging" some extreme weather, a US government report said Tuesday.

NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) said in a year-end report that 2022 tied 2017 and 2011 for the most billion-dollar disasters in a calendar year, behind the 22 and 20 separate billion-dollar events of 2020 and 2021.

The increasing number of extreme events "hints that the extremely high activity of recent years is becoming the new normal," the NCEI said.

The number and cost of weather and climate disasters was increasing, the NCEI said, due to a number of factors including increased settlement in vulnerable areas like coasts and river floodplains.

"Climate change is also supercharging the increasing frequency and intensity of certain types of extreme weather that lead to billion-dollar disasters," it said.

This is characterized by rising vulnerability to drought, lengthening wildfire seasons, flooding caused by heavy rainfall and hurricane storm surge worsened by sea level rise.

At least the headline used the word ‘weather’. Damage is going to occur when people willingly inhabit flood plains, coastal areas and unmaintained scrub lands. Inflation has nothing to do will increased damage amounts. /s

The climate fear porn for today has appeared a bit behind schedule. It needs to be there right during breakfast to instill the greatest unneeded fear (posted by STEM challenged journalists who are stupid enough to read and believe government sponsored “research”). Hey journalists, howz that COVID fear porn crap doing lately?

article: "Extreme weather caused $165 billion in US damage in 2022"

Which is but a mere drop in the bucket compared to the damage Biden and his cronies, the climate alarmists, the Covidians, the race hustlers, and the Ukrainian fabulists have done to this country, indeed what damage they have done to the world.

Yep.

Also, if nobody lives where the “severe weather” takes place, it costs nothing. When severe weather hits expensive stuff, it’s expensive. When it hits cheap stuff, it’s cheap. You can have a lot of really bad weather in less developed areas and it costs little, or a single hurricane can knock over all the skyscrapers in NYC and it’s gonna be quite expensive.

For the past 30 years, I haved in my current home in the very red central U.S. and in those 50 years my home owners insurane has replaced the roof of my house 6 times because of hail damage and just 2 years ago (same insurer) paid out over $14,000 in hail damage to my car. If I didn’t have insurance, I couldn’t afford to live here, Comprehensive premiums around $1,500 per year total for house and car.

Not mentioned - and likely unknown to the ‘writer’ - the sun is approaching a solar maximum which we will enjoy for the next two years. Oh, and the Earth’s geomagnetic field continues to weaken as a bonus.

Weather is driven by solar forcing. “Climate change” (driven by mankind) not so much
