Sweden said on Sunday that Turkey is asking for too much in exchange for allowing it to join NATO, as Ankara effectively demands the impossible – that Stockholm override a decision by its own Supreme Court. But analysts say Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is unlikely to retract its condition, at least not before the all-important presidential elections scheduled in June.
Sweden’s new conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that, as far as he is concerned, Stockholm has done enough for Ankara.
“Turkey confirms that we have done what we said we would do. But they also say that they want things that we can’t and won’t give them,” Kristersson told the Forsvar Security Conference in Sweden.
Along with neighbouring Finland, Sweden made joining NATO its top foreign policy objective last year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine jolted them from their official neutrality stretching back through the Cold War. However, Erdogan made Turkey’s green light conditional – accusing Sweden of giving safe haven to people linked to Kurdish militant group the PKK and to the Gulenist movement Turkey holds responsible for the 2016 failed coup.
Sweden – which has a large Kurdish diaspora of some 100,000 people – responded to Erdogan’s demands at a NATO summit back in June. Sweden and Finland agreed to “commit to prevent the activities of the PKK” on its territory.
Stockholm then reversed an embargo on arms sales to Turkey and distanced itself from the YPG – a Syrian militia Western countries championed for its role fighting the Islamic State group but anathema to Ankara because of its close ties to the PKK, which has waged intermittent guerrilla campaigns against the Turkish state since 1984 and is classed as a terrorist organisation by the EU and US as well as Turkey.

From what I read (can’t remember where, though), a poll in Turkey showed 70% support for the government shift towards Russia (technically they ask the Turks if they had ‘good feelings’ towards Russia), which is understandable given recent developments.

There is no provision in the NATO treaty for ejecting a member.
Just a suggestion...isn’t it time to dump NATO and create a new structure...involving the US, France, UK and Germany...then bringing in the rest (to include Finland/Sweden)....minus Turkey? At the same time...remove US forces out of Turkey.
There aren't provisions for a lot of things in life. Wars and corruptions trump rules, treaties, borders...
As we in the United States are learning, not even our nation and Constitution is sacrosanct.
Turkey geographically is a much more desirable ally.
Could the Swedes be playing a game here also?
Maybe they want to pay lip-service to Biden and his masters, but don’t really want a NATO commitment.
Then Turkey needs to quit NATO so they can cuddle up to Russia.
It would be difficult to recreate a treaty organization whose purpose is “to keep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down,”.

I doubt other countries are interested in setting up a new tool of Anglo-American dominance.
As it stands....Germany is already doing a great job of keeping themselves down. What are we up to in Germany...a three day supply of bullets?
Turkey is our enemy anyway, might as well drop the illusion they are our friend.
Turkey is an economic basket case. Erdogan is desperate for money. He might be holding up Sweeden into NATO as leverage on some wild deal to save his economy
Or perhaps reauthorize sale of F-35s to Turkey?
All more the reason to just outright conquer them.

That is a very good thought.
There is a problem however........ Turkey is beyond broke and has no $$$ to pay for the planes even if authorized

I suspect that Turkey figures they can do more to help Russia by staying in NATO. And NATO is stuck with them, since they never bothered with an a way to force out countries, as they rightly figured that if NATO was a defensive-only alliance, there wouldn’t be a need to kick anyone out. Too bad NATO didn’t stay that way.
