Your natural gas bills to jump ‘shockingly high’ across region, SoCalGas warns
The Orange County Register ^ | January 6, 2023 | By KRISTY HUTCHINGS

The cold snap, the drought and Russia's war in Ukraine are fueling huge winter rate hikes.

Southern California residents, get ready for a severe case of sticker shock as your natural gas bills across the region soar more than double this winter, according to the region’s two chief utility companies.

“There’s no easy way to put this: January bills are likely to be shockingly high,” SoCalGas said in a Thursday, Dec. 29 announcement. “As a result, our customers can expect to see higher gas bills in the coming weeks.”

Long Beach Utilities put out a similar statement on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

SoCalGas rates are expected to more than double over the cost of last winter.

Though gas bills tend to increase slightly during the winter as more gas is used to combat cold weather, both companies attributed the rate increases to corresponding hikes in the market cost of natural gas — which, for a slew of interconnected reasons including the California drought, unexpected severe cold snaps across the country, and Russia’s war in Ukraine has jumped about 128% since November.

To make matters worse, natural gas supply has not kept pace with the increased demand and U.S. natural gas exports to Europe are up significantly, putting an even greater strain on availability.

Though a majority of California’s electricity is still generated using natural gas, according to the state’s Energy Commission, about 10.2% of all California electricity is created with hydropower. The state’s shrinking water supply, though, has forced an even heavier reliance on natural gas for electricity production in recent years.

Our son out in the Bay Area just asked us how our bill was. His went up $300 in a month. Yes, it’s colder now, but not by a ton. The price is just way up, like everything else.

Yeah, got a warning from my local gas co.(SoCal) to expect a HUGE jump in price - got an estimate of my gas bill for December - I was gone for an entire week last month and the heat was off in the house - that and I keep the temp at 68 degrees at all time, and we’ve had a number of days of over 70-degree weather. My estimate was double the gas bill for the previous month.

Drill baby drill.

Until they do that, be as energy independent as you can so the Dims have one less way to control you.

By the way, higher nat gas prices = higher power prices because the Dims that are now making nat gas rates go up are the same Dims that forced a lot of power utilities to shut down coal plants and replace them with nat gas fueled power plants. The extra fuel cost to the power utility is often added as a rider to the per kWh charge in your bill.

For example, officially Alabama Power charges 12.233¢/kWh in the winter (after flat monthly fees). But in my December power bill it was 14.8322¢/kWh (after flat monthly fees).

But hey! Brandon’s “jobs numbers” are looking better than they’ve ever looked before!!! And “migrants”, they are pouring in but the millions! How ‘bout that “racist and evil” America. I heard a jerk on the radio the other day talking about the 10 most popular countries where people wanted to live. “Iceland” was numbah One! Unfortunately, the U.S. wasn’t on the list because everyone is moving here and not to those 10 “most popular” countries.

Gee, I wonder why that is.

Eh, if they really lived by their liberal bona fides, they’d be out getting jobs like any other good feminist.

When my wife and I take the EV on a trip and meet folks at charging stations, they almost always thank me for "doing my part" on saving the planet. LOL

I tell them that our Modern Warm Period is nothing more spectacular than all the warm periods since Moses and in fact the warm periods are good times to be alive. LOL

I live in Orange County, CA and we have had the wettest Autumn and early Winter for years. I make jokes about when did we move to Seattle. It rains almost every day. Has this not restored some of the reservoirs not to mention the snow pack in the Sierras? And that’s just in So Cal. The north is getting hit harder.
