My feeling is that Trump supports McConnell and McCarthy because he knows they are probably going to keep their positions one way or another and, if he does win again in 2024, he wants them willing to work with him rather than even more set in opposition to him.
I don’t think it will actually work out like that, but that’s what I think he may be calculating.

20 hardheads have to vote for McCarthy. There is no damn alternative....and they know it.
They don't *have* to do anything of the kind. McCarthy needs to win their votes. If he can't, someone else should be proposed as an alternative that both sides can live with.
