After three rounds of voting on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed to secure the 218 needed to become speaker of the House. It was the first time in a century that the vote has gone to multiple ballots. Now, the “fight spills into a second chaotic day,” notes ABC News. There’s a lot of excitement in Washington.
Of course, somewhere in the vicinity of zero voters will change their worldview or political affiliation because the GOP is taking a few extra days to grind out their leadership vote. Nor is there anything particularly “dysfunctional” about disagreeing on the question. McCarthy isn’t an admiral or preordained by the Lord to be speaker, so this isn’t “mutiny,” it’s just a vote. Indeed, a battle over leadership shows a more democratic dynamic than the typical lockstepping on the matter. In most other democratic nations this kind of parliamentary fight would be considered tame and completely expected.
However the vote ends up, though, it won’t matter much because neither side in this battle has anything special or particularly consequential to offer.
“This is about saving the country and getting somebody that’s going to cut and get us on a financial path of solvency,” claims McCarthy supporter Ralph Norman. Guess what? Kevin McCarthy isn’t Henry Clay. He possesses no extraordinary skill or vision that makes him uniquely qualified to stop the Democrats’ next spending bill, much less “save” the country. The conceit and sanctimony of politicians who believe the world is in desperate need of their talents is endlessly insufferable. If you want to venerate middling House members, become a Democrat and throw your hosannas at Nancy Pelosi.

Take a chill pill. Maybe DC will break off in to the Atlantic Ocean and drift to the Bermuda Triangle and never be seen again. Alas, I dream.
Finally some intelligent commentary on this.
Of course it doesn’t matter, it’s just stupid political version of reindeer games. Eventually they will elect someone and then get back to the business of screwing up the country and ignoring their constituents.
Anyone who honestly thinks Kevin McCarthy or Jim Jordan or anyone else banging that gavel is going to reverse the direction of the country is deluded. All they need to do is vote NO on everything, and in 2 years run for re-election. FJB is their job, period.
I’m hoping they’ll keep voting to no avail until way beyond the time that 1.7 trillion runs out.
You are right on the money...
There’s more than one way to drain a swamp....
We'll see. But I'm not ready to agree with that at this point.
They may not have shut the government down, but they have at least shut half of Congress down, and with half of Congress shut down, nothing can get passed. Especially more spending, which is money we have to borrow, and is only causing inflation.
I like what I'm hearing from these brash young Republicans. Balanced budgets, closing the border, term limits, and blocking the Omnibus.
You're not hearing that sort of talk from anyone else, so I say we give them our support. Unless you prefer just more of the same old same old.
this particular fight, though largely senseless, is over the future of management, not about some big ideological schism.
The GOPe is akin to stage four cancer, it’s pretty much over. A ‘consensus’ candidate would be gaining votes rather than losing votes after a half-dozen rounds of voting. An honorable person also would have withdrawn their name by now, but no this POS RINO bootlicker would take himself over party or country.
Trust this sellout at your own peril.
Drain it, by sinking it. I like it. While they are all on the bottom around the Azores, they can visit the USS Scorpion. I miss it, them, it won’t be so much.
not understanding all the status quo rubber stamp mentality
when that is what has gotten us into this mess to begin with
want to change course?
you gotta grab the helm
speaker has tremendous power over committees and what gets to the house floor
he can gum up the works if he wants to
SHUDDER!
Harsanye has a halcyon view of the effects of the current debacle, but he is right about one thing— neither side has displayed much of anything consequential to offer. In other words whichever side wins out it will be a Pyrrhic victory..
“ Of course, somewhere in the vicinity of zero voters will change their worldview or political affiliation because the GOP is taking a few extra days to grind out their leadership vote.”
I think they should take a few extra weeks and nominate somebody besides McTurd
Who is third in line to the presidency if we don’t elect a Speaker?
“3rd officer”
Cute, but not quite. The most important power of the speaker is that that’s who decides what bills go to vote or not.
Third in line to the presidency is trivial compared to that.
