Floods of mid-1800s turned Central Valley into vast inland sea

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) — After experiencing an atmospheric river that soaked Northern California New Year's weekend, Bay Area residents prepared for another, even stronger storm system set to arrive Wednesday that weather forecasters warn could have catastrophic impacts.
A new weather system was predicted by afternoon or evening, but the National Weather Service (NWS) said the rain would be modest until the arrival late Tuesday of another strong atmospheric river delivering a long plume of Pacific Ocean moisture.
The Bay Area office of the National Weather Service did not mince words about the approaching atmospheric river, warning it could have catastrophic impacts across the region.
"To put it simply, this will likely be one of the most impactful systems on a widespread scale that this meteorologist has seen in a long while," the statement read. "The impacts will include widespread flooding, roads washing out, hillside collapsing, trees down (potentially full groves), widespread power outages, immediate disruption to commerce, and the worst of all, likely loss of human life. This is truly a brutal system that we are looking at and needs to be taken seriously."

We had some major thunderstorms in the southeast last night. We probably got 3 inches of rain and the lightening was horrific; the type that almost blinds you even though your eyes are closed. I sat here at FR posting pretty much all night because I couldn’t get back to sleep due to the loud thunder and rain. The storm initially woke me up at 11:30 after I’d only had an hours sleep and I’ve yet to get any more. I don’t recall anyone worrying about little ole me and writing worrisome articles about the storms here! LOL!

That’s comparable to over 7 feet of snow...

Pelosi is in Georgetown DC in her townhome. Her bisexual husband will likely hole-up in the family vineyard and let SF homeless die.
Back in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s when Oakland was a nice, beautiful place to live it rained so much over a lengthily period of time that the ground became super saturated and some houses on the hills East of Lake Merritt started to slide down - foundations & all. Crews worked to tear them down, hopefully, before they hit the lower houses. Sometimes successful, sometimes not. We would see this activity every day while walking to school in the drizzle & rain. Yeah - we walked to school in the rain back then - raincoats & umbrellas. Ah memories. ;-)
Does all the rain have any mitigating effect on drought conditions, such as depleted reservoirs in CA?
I thought global warming meant California would be in a perpetual drought?
On the bright side, maybe it’ll wash away a lot of the feces and filth along the streets, byways and highways across the region.
One thing and one thing only matters:
The sierra snowpack.
Everything else is just logistics and general bitching.

The weather pattern used to be called “the Pineapple Express”, bringing much needed rainfall to the drought prone West. That isn’t scary enough for the “Climate Catastrophe” crowd, so now it’s the DANGEROUS Atmospheric Rivers”.

LOL. Now is the time to come out and say that the reason California is experiencing this weather is because they did such a great job with climate change, but they never took into consideration the risks and consequences of doing it.
That will make heads explode.
That was during the drought. Now that there’s a flood, it means catastrophic floods. It means, whatever whatever meteorological condition that people find irksome at the moment is proof of global warming.
Me, I can’t wait for some global warming. It’ll be a good thing.
