GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to secure victory in his long-running quest to become Speaker of the House in the first round Tuesday afternoon, a setback for both McCarthy and House Republicans who have an uphill battle to prove Republican leadership can govern with a narrow majority following last November's midterm elections.
The selection of House Speaker is generally a procedural step in a new majority's work to take control of the lower chamber, but Republicans in the House have had a rough go of it between the midterm elections and Tuesday's vote. GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to lock up enough votes to cruise to easy election as Speaker of the House, and the intervening period saw Republicans going after each other as much, if not more, than Democrats.

Conservatives negotiating for leading committees
This “news” is broken already.
Maybe nanzi hasn’t apporoved the position yet.
Not with this header. LOL!
From NPR
The STUPID Party On Parade
“Democrat Rep. Hakim Jeffries of New York, nominated for speaker by Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, had more votes in the first round, with 212, while McCarthy trailed with 203. Ten Republicans voted for Biggs, and nine voted for other candidates.”
I’m living history.
Do they really think he’ll keep his word ,LOL
Jim Jordan.
Yet more performative politics....
It’s all about power and position...and the American public is last yet again. We’ll see the winner on tv tonight getting applauded and that will be that.
It won’t change until we stop re-electing the fossils in Congress. And that goes for both partys. And you know they will never vote for term limits...why should they.
Surprise Surprise Surprise ….. there are a few Conservatives in amongst the congresscritters
In the real world, an outcome like this would generally make the person who eventually got elected much more humble. But politics in the US doesn't work that way. People will be punished for this spectacle, and those being punished will be conservatives. Let Pelosi run the show again. Screw this country.
McConnell has.
He’d be great. But he’d be dragged to the position he doesn’t want. Poor Paul Ryan went through the same thing and hated every minute of it. Why do the same to Jim Jordan?
LOL...now that’s a GOOD theory!
I shouldn’t laugh too hard, though.
“Maybe nanzi hasn’t apporoved the position yet.”
The country has not been well-served by Speakers from California.
McCarthy already has lost 8 Republican votes in the 2nd round vote and they’re only about a third through the roll call.
Yep, our so-called leaders have been screwing the People for decades. May as well let them finish the People off
“I’m living history.”
Every day.
Personally, I could care less if Kevin McCarthy gets elected Speaker or not, but he reminds me of Hillary Clinton.
His entire political career has been geared towards becoming Speaker of the House, now that the Republicans have control of the House, he assumes it’s his god given right to become speaker.
He doesn’t have the votes. There are only 2-3 things that can happen.
McCarthy makes a deal to get the required votes.
McCarthy steps aside knowing he can never win and backs an acceptable 3rd party candidate.
Somehow a Democrats gets elected, with turncoat Republican Votes, which I think is the least likely outcome.
There is a reason McCarthy doesn’t have the votes, if you constantly complain about Republicans never doing anything then if you support electing the same people over and over again especially to leadership then that is insane.
