Subtle heart defect can be present in young men (and women,I assume) who appear to be completely healthy. Reggie Lewis of the Boston Celtics was another. He had passed out during a "scrimmage" game and consulted a top Boston hospital...which told him he should never play again. He sought a second opinion at another top Boston hospital and was told that he could play.
Turns out the first hospital was right.

My daughter went in for a physical when she was about 10 years old & the nurse heard something with her heart & pointed it out to the doctor who referred us to a cardiologist. She had a hole between chambers & the cardiologist said it was fairly common in women & usually caught after a woman has given birth because the stress of birth exacerbates the issue. Told us we were lucky that we had a nurse who heard something odd.

One of the policemen who did CPR on Reggie Lewis was none other than the policeman who arrested Henry “Skippy” Gates, Obama’s friend...
