Former President Donald Trump issued a statement in response to Democrats releasing his tax returns Friday, saying “it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people.”
The House Ways and Means Committee successfully released the tax returns after a years-long legal battle to obtain them. Trump had filed an application in October to block the committee from reviewing his tax returns, but the Supreme Court ruled against Trump in November.
“The Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people. The great USA divide will now grow far worse,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Democrats’ request was made to look into whether Trump’s taxes were properly audited under the IRS’s auditing system for presidents, according to the committee’s report. (RELATED: House Committee Releases Trump’s Tax Returns)
“The Radical Left Democrats have weaponized everything, but remember, that is a dangerous two-way street! The ‘Trump’ tax returns once again show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises,” Trump added in his statement.

I propose that anyone whose supposedly confidential federal tax information is released to the public is never liable for either filing a tax return or for any federal taxes ever again. It’s confidential, which means you DO NOT release it.
As an aside, one of the angles they were pursuing was that Trump had classified information at Mar-a-Lago, i.e. information that he shouldn’t have had. (Setting aside the issue that as CIC and CEO of the United States, he had unilateral declassification authority over everything.) So it’s mighty ironic that they made such a big deal of not only acquiring information they shouldn’t have had, namely, his tax returns, but that they made such a big deal of releasing that information to the public. Confidential information that was disclosed to the government under an agreement and a law that the information would be kept confidential.
It has been claimed that every President from Carter through Obama voluntarily released their tax returns for the years they were in office. The tradition started with Nixon. But that was voluntary. Involuntary disclosure is another matter.
While in office, they're subject by law to be released.

Which matches what investopedia said. Bill Clinton was an exception but his returns were later disclosed by Hillary.

Yes no one squawked when slick willie didn’t disclose his returns. However Hillary did finally release all of them.
In the end all of them from Nixon onwards disclosed their tax returns except Ford who only released a summarized version. But they did it voluntarily. Only Trump got the involuntary treatment

It would be a hoot if we got a Republican in office and the first thing he or she does is demand that every democrat produce their tax returns or face criminal charges as in “show us your tax returns or go to jail; which will it be?”
