Diabetes in Youth Is Set to Skyrocket in Coming Decades
STAT News ^ | Dec. 30, 2022 | Elaine Chen

The number of young people in the U.S. with type 2 diabetes could surge by about 700% over the next four decades, with a greater burden falling on minority groups, a new model predicts.

If the recent acceleration of new diagnoses persists, then 220,000 people younger than 20 would have type 2 diabetes in 2060, compared with 28,000 in 2017, the latest year for which data is available, according to projections published this month in Diabetes Care. Even if the rate of new diagnoses stays constant, there would still be a 70% increase in type 2 cases by 2060.

Type 1 cases are also set to climb during that period, increasing 65% if the recent acceleration of diagnoses persists and 3% if the rate stays constant, the study predicts.

The figures point to the enormous public health burden facing the U.S. — not only from diabetes itself, but also from the rippling health problems and costs stemming from the condition. People with diabetes are at risk of complications such as kidney failure, heart disease and stroke.

Related: Diabetes treatments are improving. Racial disparities are wider than ever “This new research should serve as a wake-up call for all of us,” Debra Houry, acting principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Thursday in a statement. The CDC funds the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study, on whose data the projections are based.

The CDC said possible reasons for the trend in type 2 cases are the growing prevalence of childhood obesity and maternal diabetes, both of which raise the risk of diabetes in young people.

Racial and ethnic minority groups are set to experience a greater burden of disease, with the highest prevalence likely to be among non-Hispanic Black youth, according to the projections.

That finding comes as recent studies show persistent racial disparities in the treatment of diabetes care – such as gaps in the ability to achieve good blood sugar control while taking insulin, and also in the use of insulin pumps.

The implications are grave since research has shown that young people with diabetes may suffer higher treatment failure and poorer outcomes than people who are diagnosed with diabetes as adults, said K. M. Venkat Narayan, executive director of the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center. Narayan is unaffiliated with the new findings, but had helped set up the SEARCH study years ago.

“Diabetes in youth, particularly type 2 diabetes in youth, is a far more serious disease than in older adults,” he said.

That’s because “body positivity” is about black bodies and we’re now being told that working out and staying in shape is white supremacy.

Because our youth are generally fat and lazy.

Add in pot smoking and they also become stupid.

I ought to feel guilty because other people make bad choices. Please punish me with higher taxes. I deserve it. [/s]

Kids aren't allowed to play outside or walk to and from school anymore. Playgrounds have been sanitized--no more jungle gyms, merry-go-rounds, monkey bars or swing sets. Kids can't join Indian Guides, which was discontinued for being "racist" and their parents don't dare allow them to join the Boy Scouts, which have been taken over by sodomites.

So what's a 21st century kid to do except sit all day in front of a computer playing video games?

That finding comes as recent studies show persistent racial disparities in the treatment of diabetes care. . .

Errr, isn't this really about persistent self-treatment by the victim class with sugar-laden soda pop 24/7/365?

Isn't the care with the major disparity the care of self? Isn't that what should be talked about—rather than trying to blame others for all the Coke, purple drank, and fries?

Physical inactivity is a factor.

Walk into a grocery and notice how more than 80% of the food available jacks up blood glucose.

People just don’t know they are killing themselves.

"My name is Rhoda Morgenstern. I was born in the Bronx, New York in December, 1941. I've always felt responsible for World War II. The first thing I remember liking that liked me back was food. I had a bad puberty; it lasted 17 years. I'm a high school graduate. I went to art school. My entrance exam was on a book of matches. I decided to move out of the house when I was 24; my mother still refers to this as the time I ran away from home. Eventually I ran to Minneapolis, where it's cold, and I figured I'd keep better. Now I'm back in Manhattan. New York, this is your last chance!"

These numbers are skewed because the minority groups breed like rats hence more lazy asses and cookie munchers in minority groups.

studies show persistent racial disparities in the treatment of diabetes care – such as gaps in the ability to achieve good blood sugar control while taking insulin,

As the mother of two Type 1 diabetics, I will flat out say that 95 percent of good blood sugar control rests with the diabetic. It's not racism, health equity, white supremacy, or moon spots. It's YOU and what YOU put in your mouth and dosing properly for your carbs. It's whether or not YOU decide to get exercise that helps with blood sugar control and it's YOU deciding to eat a donut or an apple.

This attitude of removing all responsibility for health off of the person and onto others chaps my ass. I've heard medical doctors (yes, black) testify in congressional hearings that higher incidences of maternal mortality in black women is NOT due to lifestyle choices but to racism in medical care, as if blacks are not expected to take care of themselves LIKE EVERYONE ELSE when they're pregnant. And not a single congressperson dared call bullshit.

What was never questioned was whether black women are fatter as a group than whites (they are), which lead to more complications, whether they were less diligent in going to their prenatal appointments (they are), whether they had a crappier diet (they do), or whether they had a higher rate of drinking/drugging while pregnant (I don't know).

Not a single congressperson dared ask any of those questions that must be asked to find out the real reasons why blacks have worse outcomes. Of course, that was never the point of the hearing, as we all know.

And now that we have been told that healthier eating exercise are examples of white supremacy, and even more shockingly, some people actually believe that, I expect to see even worse outcomes in the future.
