Just a guess on my part. I doubt the driver knew what kind of car was tailing him. The police were likely able to determine it by matching phone record time stamps to the gas station video time stamp.

It will be interesting to see if there were additional detection methods such as license plate readers that would place him in the Moscow city limits at the time of the murders. Looks to me like the DNA evidence is what really caught the guy and the rest of evidence will help to solidify the case.
