During the Duke's Mayo Bowl this Friday afternoon, NC State play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn apparently made a reference to "illegal aliens."
Several people reportedly heard Hahn say "down among all the illegal aliens in El Paso it’s UCLA leading Pitt" while providing the score of the Sun Bowl.
Hahn's employer, Learfield Communications, wasted no time disciplining him for his actions. The company announced that Hahn has been suspended indefinitely.
Kyle Winchester, the general manager of Wolfpack Sports Properties, released a statement on Hahn.
"Learfield has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn indefinitely following comments made during today's Duke Mayo Bowl radio broadcast," Winchester said.
Hahn was named the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year in 2011 and 2020. He has been the voice of NC State's football and men's basketball teams since 1991.
It's safe to say Hahn's broadcasting future with Learfield Communications is up in the air.
You beat me.
It was about slaves being bred for strength.
I think he said something about muscular thighs or speed.

What did he say...”look at that MFer go”?
During the first half of the September 5, 1983 Monday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, Cosell’s commentary on wide receiver Alvin Garrett included “That little monkey gets loose doesn’t he?” Cosell’s references to Garrett as a “little monkey,” ignited a racial controversy that laid the groundwork for Cosell’s departure from MNF at the end of the 1983 season. The Rev. Joseph Lowery, then-president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, denounced Cosell’s comment as racist and demanded a public apology. Despite supportive statements by Jesse Jackson, Muhammad Ali, and Alvin Garrett himself, the fallout contributed to Cosell’s decision to leave Monday Night Football following the 1983 season.
You're right. Should have said illegal wetbacks, disgusting wetbacks, anything but the legal term "illegal aliens". PC talk run amok. Might as well call criminal thieves "unfortunate borrowers".
Every one of us, let’s admit it, needs to be more sensitive and gentle to carefully tiptoe around anyone who has any sort of chip on their shoulder or who has experienced even the slightest bit of challenge or difficulty in their lifetimes.
That’s what made America great.
Some in the past who did not complain:
The British military wrote in the Revolutionary War in their journals that they were able to track the movements of the American soldiers in the winter by the trails of blood in the snow as many had torn shoes or had no shoes but wrapped their feet in cloth and kept trudging forward.
Maybe he should have just called them ‘wetbacks’.
Every company in America has been forced to hire a black "girlboss" to run their now-mandated corporate "Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity" program in order to have a "front office that looks like America."
They're the ones making these decisions.
So what? it was an accurate statement.
I despise, loathe and hate them.
Why suspend him for speaking the truth?
This has gotten ridiculous! No matter what you say, if it offends someone, you have to be silenced! It matters not what you say, if the “privileged” group does not like that word, you are done!. Therefore, you must be figuratively stoned to death and canceled! Soon, they will move to the literal stoning.
I’m sick of it too.
You Are more than silenced. You lose your job and are shut out from having any others.
Some people CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
John Gruden
Don Cherry.
I would call it insensitive.
Accurate is what I would call it. Therefore politically incorrect.
This is insane! There is nothing insensitive about saying illigal aliens because that is what they are. This term has been used for a long time. I like to know the name of the individuals who says this is cause for suspension. We are becoming like the old Soviet Union.
I remember when I used to watch Don Cherry all the time. His wife Rose told reporters “I tighten up in stress that sooner or later something he says is going to end his career.”
The sidekick very straitlaced announcer for a long time was suspended for openly complaining on the air that the network executives ordered them to end their coverage of an exciting tied game in order to screen another show. The bosses quickly booted him for not being meek enough. Cherry was okay that particular time.
But of course in 2019:
TORONTO (AP) — Don Cherry, Canada’s most polarizing, flamboyant and opinionated hockey commentator, was fired Monday for calling immigrants “you people” in a television rant in which he said new immigrants are not honoring the country’s fallen soldiers.Nov 11, 2019
