From work from home to collect at home: Why are so many people walking by those "help wanted" signs rather than inquiring about work?

My late father had a very strong work ethic. He came here with a wife and three kids and worked two jobs to take care of us. Eventually, he got back to banking, his profession in Cuba, but he worked carrying luggage at a hotel for almost four years. My father would be shocked to see people collecting money for doing nothing.

Why are so many people walking by those "help wanted" signs rather than inquiring about work? The answer is government benefits, what a friend from Finland once called the "European disease" -- paying people for not working.

This is a horrible report but it's true.  Let's check the details:

The labor force participation rate was 62.1% last month, notably lower than the 63.4% mark it was at before the coronavirus pandemic struck the United States in March 2020.

There are numerous reasons that unemployed Americans aren't entering the workforce, including ongoing fears of COVID-19, disabilities such as "long COVID," and other care responsibilities. One factor that is contributing to the relatively low labor force participation rate is the combination of unemployment benefits and recently expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, according a new study by the nonprofit Committee to Unleash Prosperity.

In 14 states, unemployment benefits and ACA subsidies for family of four with two people not working amounts to annualized equivalent of $80,000 a year in wages and benefits, the study found.

Those benefits come out to over $100,000 in three states -- Washington, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

If you pay them to stay home then they will stay home, to paraphrase the famous baseball movie. I do find interesting that Massachusetts and New Jersey are losing population to red states. Maybe people are getting tired of paying taxes to support these benefits.

What’s the difference between working from your home and someone in India or China doing the same job from their home?

You state as a fact that Walmart does not send job applications to their central clearing house.

Yet that is exactly what Walmart says they do.

Sorry but you are wrong.

Again.

It is really wonderful how you manage to do it so very often.

“You state as a fact that Walmart does not send job applications to their central clearing house.”

I never said that.

“Yet that is exactly what Walmart says they do.”

Please cite where they say that.

People aren't gonna go work for a large company that wanted to force them to get a shot.

I beat my large (23,000+ employees) at that game. I refused. On the evening of the deadline (7:00pm--technically 2 hours after the deadline), I was expecting to be fired. Instead, they backed off, and told me to come back.

I did, only because it's a great paying job, and I work from home. If they ever repeat that, I will again hold firm, and resume my job search.

A subsidy to help pay for health insurance isn't going to keep you from working if you otherwise would.

This is a stupid point to try to jack up the value of the benefits.

No I didn’t and you know it because you won’t cite my post.

But I will unwrap your lie by citing it.

Walmart forwards the application to stores selected by the applicant.

You should move to Huntsville Alabama, defense contractors would be bidding for you. If you have a degree, military background and a TS clearance you can name your own price.

Section 8 subsidies for “low income” households

https://www.sectioneightapplication.com/apply/PA#:~:text=A%20household%20should%20have%20low,after%20meeting%20the%20basic%20requirements.

Medicaid for low income
https://www.dhs.pa.gov/Services/Assistance/Pages/MA-General-Eligibility.aspx

Food stamp eligibility
https://www.dhs.pa.gov/Services/Assistance/Pages/SNAP-Income-Limits.aspx

Basically, if you have no provable assets and not so much cash income, you can qualify for a lot of “stuff”

List of federal “means tested” programs

https://www.hhs.gov/answers/hhs-administrative/what-programs-use-the-poverty-guidelines/index.html

Basically, if you get most of your income working “off the books”, and apply for every means-tested program you qualify for (according to your “visible” income), you can live quite well.

A subsidy to help pay for health insurance isn't going to keep you from working if you otherwise would.

It will if working full time will push you over the income threshold act, where losing value of the benefits exceeds the extra income.

I did the same with my company, pointing to studies of heart complications from the vaccine, along with my heart history.

Told my boss “let me know when my last day will be”. I think enough valuable people said no that the company backed down. Especially since we were all working from home at the time, so what was the point?

“What’s the difference between working from your home and someone in India or China doing the same job from their home?”

What’s the difference between working from an office doing a job that could be done from home, and someone in India or China doing the same job from their home? Same answer - so going into an office won’t save your job.

And the correct answer is, competence. Many Third World workers have diploma-mill degrees and fictional resumes; but beancounters don’t care.

I like hearing about incidents like this.

I suspect a lot of companies would have relented in similar fashion, but that many employees weren't ready to risk their jobs to find out.

Hats off to you for not flinching.
