Is Trump now forced to run third-party?
HILL ^ | 12/24/2022 | DOUGLAS MACKINNON, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR

Posted on 12/24/2022 10:34:31 AM PST by ChicagoConservative27

At a certain point, all decisions and election chances in politics come down to basic math. No matter how some consultants, pollsters or campaign managers may attempt to complicate the process to justify their fees or salaries paid by a candidate or company, it still comes down to this: Does the math finish on the “plus side” for him or her to run, and does it finish on the plus side for the candidate to win?

My mother used to say, “If you can read, you can cook.” In the arena of political elections, if you can do basic addition and subtraction, you can honestly advise a candidate whether to run. Former President Donald Trump has some of that basic math working against him — but also, for him.

What he and his mercurial ego really will do becomes the political question of the 2024 presidential cycle.

With each passing week, there are reports of more and more Republicans suffering from “Trump fatigue.” Although many still strongly approve of most of Trump’s policies from his four years in the White House, they have grown increasingly tired of his perceived juvenile antics and insults. Worse for Trump, many now blame him for the GOP losing the chance to take control of the Senate — not only in the November midterms, when he forced marginal candidates on the party with his endorsements, but also back in 2021 when he suppressed GOP voter turnout with negative comments and attacks in Georgia’s runoff election.

To run a t would be third party would be disastrous. Besides, Trump already has most county Republican Parties in his hand. Lets work on getting all of them.

One of my biggest concerns. Looking like reality by the posts here.

Well put!

There’s another albatross that will be hung around Trump’s neck if he runs - Operation Warp Speed. As time goes on more and more will be coming out about how full of risk the vaccine developments were. That risk was never adequately communicated. Heck let’s just admit it wasn’t communicated at all! That will be blamed on Trump! Any Rat or Rat crony role will be conveniently forgotten. Trump has to find a way to walk back his cheerleading! It will be hard for him.

One of my biggest concerns. Looking like reality by the posts here.

So many here believe that "Burn down the GOP!" is the answer, imagining some patriotic, conservative, "traditional American values" party will emerge from the ashes.

Nope.

A new, more powerful brand of Democratic Party that resembles the Khmer Rouge is what we'll get.

You think "woke" is bad now? Just wait until the GOP brand is so fractured and poisoned that Republicans are struggling to win elections in Wyoming. It can definitely happen if we decide to "Burn it all down!"

Yes Trump needs to continue transforming the GOP at the county level.

How do you know you can't win, if you don't even try?

We landed 5 divisions at Normandy on D-Day. I suppose we could have tried with a single platoon, because after all, no way to know that a single platoon wouldn't be enough until you try, right?

“ It would serve the GOPee right to have Trump run as Perot.”

Trump isn’t running. He will be the king maker. His base is bigger than the rest of the Republican Party combined. The candidate who most aligns with Trumps policies will get his endorsement. The Republican Party are playing a game which Trump at worst finds amusing.

In retrospect, we'd probably have been much better off if he had done that.

Trump would have run under his own party, the GOP would have nominated its own candidate, and both would have gotten absolutely clobbered by the Democrats. There wouldn't have been a January 6 because it wouldn't have been remotely close, no claim that he was cheated, and we'd be entering 2024 with a clean slate.

Least painful election to have demonstrated the futility of a third party.

If Trump cannot win the Republican Party nomination then no quality candidate can. That includes DeSantis.

DeSantis can win the nomination if all the Dem Trump-haters switch parties in order to nominate him--knowing he will lose in the general--and the RINOs of course will vote for DeSantis.

Even so, my spidey sense says Play It Straight: No third party--this time, anyway. Hope that DeSantis can wait it out for the good of the party and the country.

Your example is lame. The Republican Party was formed because people got tired of the other parties. None of the southerners would vote for the party because Republicans were against the spread of slavery. They took a chance, despite the southern opposition, and ran Abe Lincoln as their first Presidential candidate. Just imagine if they hadn’t even tried.

Second presidential candidate. They ran John Fremont in 1856.

100 percent. We are nearly there now. I do not understand it one iota. Logic is out the window.

Let's hope Trump endorses some better people than he did in '22.

Maybe if better people actually ran, instead of having to choose between the turd sandwich and the giant douche.

Yup. He has to. But the uniparty will NEVER allow him to be in power. They will stop at nothing to stop him or anyone that advocates anything other than the uniparty agenda.

Fourth, a third party run concedes the GOP to the GOPe. It won’t go away and neither will they. I’ll vote for Trump if he runs, but don’t want him to split the vote and throw the election to the Democrats.

I don't want this to sound mean but there is ONLY the GOP e. They ALLOW a certain number of reformists to exist but they never have real power. They allow them because that way they get people to keep voting for them.
