The bitter cold accompanying this powerful winter storm broke some long-standing record lows for parts of Montana and Wyoming. Casper, Wyoming, saw its coldest day ever on Thursday as temps plummeted to a bone-chilling 42 degrees F below. It was also a Casper record for Dec. 22, with the old record of 33 below set in 1983. Other areas breaking records Thursday included Riverton, Wyoming, which dropped to 31 degrees below, shattering a 24-year record.

Yep, we are getting the Chinook, too. Low to Mid 40s early next week. Here comes the slush!

Nope. Then it’ll be back to business as usual — “The earth has a fever — we are all going to burn up!”

I have sworn I will never spend another Oklahoma August here but do. I bought the Airstream to retreat in August but have yet to do it in my sixth year of retirement. I may not.

It is all about delta T. Summer seldom exceeds 25 between comfortable inside and outside. Winter goes well beyond that with 70 degrees differential here right now between inside and outside. It takes lots of insulation, preparation and energy to hold that small comfort differential tempersture. Add minus 40 to that and it is hard to believe it is possible to keep warm.

Never mind the endless ice, snow and slop. When I want all that I’ll rent it or visit with prepaid tickets back to someplace warmer.

Oh, and then there are the constant struggles with equipment in severe cold. Like my truck horn going off when the pad contracts fron the cold, or diesel gelling , frozen pipes, cold or frozen animals, the list goes on. Summer does not bring these or so many problems though I envy the mild summer of beautiful blossoms instead of our sum parched struggles to grow things.

Ever try to keep a drilling rig thawed in the north or Alaska? No fun at all!

Glycol based antifreeze is most effective at a 50% glycol to 70% glycol dilution. 50% is good to about -37°C (-35°F). 70% glycol is good to about -50°C (-58°F).

I graduated from HS in ‘69 before all this “climate change” crap was dreamed up. All we had was assassinations, race riots, global nuclear war, Cold War, and Vietnam. Not much to worry about back then.

Actually, 70% glycol & 30% water is effective to -50°C (-58°F).

Oh...I totally agree. I’m just amazed at how the vernacular has changed now that the world isn’t “warming”.

Thanks for posting the Jack London link.

Anyone who has not spent significant time in -40 conditions can catch the flavor of it in this gripping account of a Yukon January bad day.

Oh goodness...my hunch is that you know the answer. ;-) On checking out of the hotel at about 7:30AM the TV in the lobby said -40C. I knew almost nothing about Celsius so I wasn't sure what to think. But then minutes later my car's thermometer said -40F.

Fahrenheit and Celsius meet at -40!

“We’re in the Cody area and got down to -32 yesterday. It was much warmer this morning at -20 and right now it’s a perfect zero!”

I like Cody. the wife and I went to the Buffalo Bill Museum and I told her we should move to Cody (we live in Longmont, Co.) and she said “ there’s nothing here”. I said to her, there’s a Home depot, a Walmart, a hospital and a gun store on every corner, what more do you want?
